Torsion bar for 440?
« on: March 06, 2014 - 10:42:39 AM »
Can someone educate me on torsion bars? From what I understand, the larger the better with a 440, right? My Cuda was a 318 car from the factory, but the previous owner had a big block in the car when I got it. I dont know if he upgraded the torsions bars, what is the best way to measure them?

If I need to upgrade them, my dad has a pile of torsion bars from all the cars he's parted out over the years. Is there a part number on them so I can figure out if we have some that will work?

yes there are pn on them. also right and left. use a dial caliper and measure the diameter is the best way. also different lengths not al will work. many choices in the aftermarket. remember these are the springs that hold up the car and affect handling and ride. using 40 year old stuff you have laying around may not be a good idea, depending on what you want in the end.

Yes, they will be on the end of the bar.  The HD bars should be .89's.  The Hemi bars were a little bigger.(.92?)  My 318 car got the .89 bars because it has the HD suspension.

Would the hemi bars be overkill if I used them with a 440? Also, B body and E bodt bars are the same, right?

I'm pretty sure that b body bars are longer.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

it depends on how rough/stiff you want the front end,  .920 are stock 383/440 bars as the .960 are 440 and hemi bars.

we have a 6 pack cuda that i had the .960 and it road real hard, swapped them out for the .920 and its a way better ride.

They should be the same 66-72 B body to E body , maybe different #s but not from what I remember
http://www.hotchkis.net/forged_torsion_bars_be_body_models.html
these use the same bars for both
