8 3/4 bearings, I just dont get it, call me stupid

Ok, I just dont get it regarding adjustible wheel bearing on the 8 3/4 diff.

So, if both axles were connected in the middle solidly so to speak i get it but, they arent, so why is it that only the left side wheel bearing has the adjustable pre load.

they are both tapered bearings when it says to adjust the bearing on the left side, then smack the right axles with a deadblow hammer and check the end play in the LH axle, and adjust what stops the RH axle from going back out and opening up end play etc.

I must be missing something, does anyone have a basic dot point explanation for a dummy. (me)

There is a block in the center of the differential case assembly that the axles butt up against.

There is a block in the center of the differential case assembly that the axles butt up against.
:iagree: The one side will load up the other side with the one adjuster. :2thumbs:

ok, I understand the block connects the two kind of, so, ref the LH axle,(NON adjustible) you put the bearing on and the collar and that sets up bearing pre-load for that axle?, same goes for the RH axle, what your adjusting with the adjuster is not bearng pre-load but axle "float" ????

Same thing in retrospect buddy, one axle pushes on the other to determine preload of axle float, the axle does not really float as it has a constant load from the weight of the car and the adjustment on the one side that controls both sides. Floating axle rear ends have true axle float as they only have load on the splines and not on any other part, do you know what i mean old mate ?

Correct. The two axles "float" laterally (in relation to the car) within the differential carrier - the one bearing is "fixed" and the other bearing sets the end-play for both axles.  :cheers:
