any tricks in setting up 8 3/4 carrier bearing preload?
« on: April 10, 2014 - 07:23:21 AM »
Team,
Im about to replace the bearings in my 489 centre, both pinion and carrier and install a crush eliminator sleeve. I have the 1972 wervice manual, is there any tricks or things to watch for in setting up the carrier pre-load??? the service manual says, do up the flange side adjuster until there is no backlash, then do up the gear side adjuster until you have the correct backlash and that will be the bearing pre-load set ready to go?

If I recall right the carrier bearing preload was quite low and the adjustment went like you described. Someone with better memory will hopefully chime in on that one.

I also replaced the crush sleeve with solid spacer.

For the pinion bearing the shop manual specified a drag value for the new bearing that should be measured by rotating the pinion shaft. The value was in inch pounds and I made some scientific measurements installing some lever through the u-joint holes in the yoke and then rotated the pinion by pushing the lever with kitchen scale. I had to do couple of iterations with the shims to get it right.
