727 Filter

Can I use both of these? I've currently got this one on my 727...
DACRON, SMALL with two holes.








I ordered a 727 filter and got this one..
DACRON, LARGE with only one hole.



I think my 727 is a 1974-75 model as far as I could tell from the serial number PK3681864.
Not a big difference, but I get nervous when see stuff like this. A ruined gearbox due to wrong filter would be an epic fail.

 Should work fine, the three mounting holes look the same.

Bottom pic with one large hole is what I'm familiar with.

I ran into this issue recently. Use the larger one hole version only for 727 trans....

The two hole version is not preferred. It can bolt on and the parts counter guys looking at the catalog book will say "it works" - but don't get fooled... the filter is smaller and means less filtering area. The second hole in the filter is for 1962-1965. I feel this does not seal up properly when mounted flush to the valve body (this could lead to some unfiltered fluid).

I had to argue with Summit Racing and Transgo for days about the sealing issue (deep pan setup ) with included photos to drive my point when I added a shift kit and mess screen filter.

The large dacron filter was used from 1966 to 1999.  The small dacron filter was used from 1962-2001.  This was for the 727.
The 904 used the small filter from 1960-2003, and the large dacron from 1966-2003.

In both cases, there was a small brass filter also used from 1960-2003.  Every transmission shop customer I had only had the larger filter on the shelf.  The large filter fit everything current, and if they had an older vehicle in the shop that needed the small filter, or had a racer/hp unit in the shop, they'd order whatever filter required  from our warehouse.

I stand corrected - from the Torqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook By Carl Munroe

"There have been basically two A-727 replaceable filters over the years. 1962-1965 rear pump model used a small filter with two holes, one to feed the front pump and the other for the rear pump. Late (1966 up) filters were larger and  had only one hole to feed the front pump. These filters are available from Dacron or brass screen type filter media."


I was having problems sealing off the second hole on the smaller / two hole filter version with a "Mopar" deep pan and filter extension setup. I end up using the large / one hole type for 1966 up.   Hence why I recommended the larger / one hole version because of the better size and non second hole (sealing issue I had). :2cents:
