fuel delivery
« on: March 23, 2014 - 02:49:16 PM »
Hey guys,

Cars running rich for sure. Black smoke out the exhaust, smells like gas, plugs are black. Running a quick fuel 850 black diamond on the 440. How much adjustment can I get from the corner screws? I suppose its running rich going down the road as well because I have black soot on my rear valance. I was told I might need to change the primary jets. I should add also the car runs great with great throttle response, starts right up and shuts down good but man does it stink and throw out the smoke. Its timed right, big tube Dougs headers with 2 1/2 in X-pipe exhaust.

Every engine is different but I had to go down on both jets and play with  squirters and air bleeds.(also a 850 Quick fuel) I'd recommend a air/fuel ratio gauge, sure took the guess work out of mine.  :2thumbs:

Don't forget to check vacuum for the correct power valve, mine was running way rich and the plugs were black, went from a 6.5 to 3.5 valve made a big difference.

There is a basic tuning guide in the archives , you need to make one change at a time & in the correct order or it can affect the other changes made , you do need to check idle vacuum in gear to be sure the power valve si staying closed at idle

What others have said here...

It's either an incorrect power valve for your setup, or your primary jets are too large. Given the black smoke and soot that you are talking about, I would suspect the power valve first.
