If you’ve read my build thread, then you know I installed a Nu-Relics (they make the kits for XV) power window kit. However I could never get the passenger side working correctly. No matter how I adjusted it would bind up at the top and the motor would start jumping and skipping teeth. I’ll admit that it could just have been caused by my incompetence, but I got so frustrated that I finally put back in the stock manual regulator and just had the drivers side power.
I couldn’t really find anyone else that had the same kit except for Shafi Keisler and his red Cuda. If you read his build thread he also had problems with the kit and ultimately swapped it out for the Electric Life kit.
http://www.keislerauto.com/the-maximum-overdrive-kuda/page-7.htmlSo that’s what I decided to do. The Electric Life kit is a little under $300 at Summit which is quite a bit cheaper than the Nu-Relics kit (this is for 2 windows). I never roll down the back quarter windows, so I didn’t bother with a power kit for them.
The first thing I noticed was the Electric Life doesn’t look nearly as robust as the Nu-Relics kit. The Nu-Relics kit actually looks a lot like the stock regulator with a large motor hanging off of it. The electric motor on the EL kit is smaller than the Nu-Relics, so I was worried how well it would work (turns out it works great). So since I had all 3 sets here’s some pictures (Nu-Relics is the black one):
I figured I would weigh them at the same time (with a bathroom scale):
Nu-Relics: 8.5 lbs
stock: 7.5 lbs
Electric Life: 4.5 lbs
After installing the Electric Life kit I was able to get both windows working good and I’m really happy I made the switch. The EL kit is much cheaper cost wise and lighter weight to boot.
One thing to keep in mind with these aftermarket kits, they are never going to work as well or as smooth as the power windows in your new car. If you can get over that, then I’d recommend the EL kit. Here’s a video I took showing the operation of the Nu-Relics kit and the Electric Life kit. You can see the torque the Nu-Relics kit puts on the door (its a heavy duty motor). If anyone wants to try the Nu-Relics kit contact me and you can buy mine cheap (maybe you can get the passenger side working).
Hopefully this helps anyone considering power windows.
