Changed break-in oil and found particles

Used a paint filter to screen my oil. This is a rebuilt 440 that had sat for over 20 years before i had it rebuilt. I know its normal to have a little bit of fine particles after a rebuild, but is this excessive?

Doesn't look particularly nice, but I'd change the oil and filter, run it at an idle until it warmed up completely and dump it again and filter it. That would give you an indication whether it was a one-time, blow out the crap deal or if you've got bigger problems. Either way, having that much particulate in the engine isn't good. Good luck!

how bout cutting open the oil filter and examining whats in there?

Looks like dirt. Is it metal? Can you give us a bigger picture?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I would say it is normal , the reason for crosshatch on the cylinder walls is to file the rings to fit the cylinders , the cam has Parkerizing coating & it wears away as well , also some brg material is worn away , most of this is washed down as the oil returns to the pan & drops to the bottom , the reason you run the engine at 2000 RPM for the first 20-30 mins is to keep enough oil on the cam being spryed up from the crank & running down from the heads , at idle there is not enough oil flow on the cam .

I will be cutting open the filter today and will let you know what i find in it.  I suspect everything is ok, after all i would think that it would not be easy for the engine builder to get the block and heads completely cleaned up. Another oil and filter change might be a good idea.
By the way, what is the secret to getting the filter off without getting oil all over the top of the k-member? I am going to have to find another way to get the filter off also, my wrench doesn't fit to well on it.

Slide a plastic bag- with no holes in the bottom, over the filter when you spin it off and the filter shouldn't be so tight that you need a wrench to get it loose. Put it on hand tight and use a finger-full of the oil to lube the new gasket.

or cut a plastic milk jug into a V & slide it under the filer so it will drain out the front

Hey, those are good suggestions.  I've been sliding a piece of cardboard under the filter.  Never worked great.

I cut the filter open and everything looks good inside. Just a few small particles.  Those Napa Gold filters are awesome.  Same as the wix. I wouldn't use anything else.  I seen a fram filter once that a friend took out of his car, it had sucked together in the middle . Looked like an hour glass.

That is all I use too , even a 2 lt soda bottle cut will drain the oil forward
