Dome Light & Map Light problem - 74 challenger
« on: May 04, 2014 - 04:43:41 AM »
When the map light switch is off (pulled towards the driver in my case), the map and dome light stay off when the doors are either open or closed.

When the map light switch is on and the doors are open, the map light and dome light both stay off, and the dimmer knob has no effect at this stage. But when the doors are closed with the ML switch still on, the map light and dome light will both turn on, but with brightness inverse to each other. As the dimmer knob turns counterclockwise, the dome light will dim and the map light will brighten, and the dome light then shuts off completely after the dimmer switch is turned completely to the left. What does this mean?

I have the yellow wire from the ML switch connecting to the yellow-black wire on the time delay relay, to the yellow from the right & left door switches, the dimmer switch, and to the yellow on the dome lamp. The pink wire from the ML switch is plugged into the red candelabra.

The ignition switch light works fine with the time delay relay. The dash lights, ash tray light, and console light all dim as they should with the dimmer switch.

This damn map/dome light thing is the last electrical problem for my restoration. Please help! Thanks.

It has to do with the grounds , the dome light is always powered & as you open the door the light grounds at either door switch , this has nothing to do with the map light at all

After I spent an hour checking the ground connections, I opened up the dome light to meter the contacts and realized I had a single contact lightbulb shoved in there instead of the bi-contact type. I'm surprised it lit up at all instead of shorting out.

Oh well, it works now and that's all that matters.

Not to hijack this thread, but in my '71 Chally the spring in my dome light seems to be stuck.  I have the correct bulb, but when I try to push it in and turn it to latch it, the spring adjustment does not move.  I tried to press it with a flat head screw driver and it does not move.  Any suggestions how to fix this, or am I subject to buy a new dome light?

penetrating fluid or pull the socket out & see if the wires are kinked in behind the socket .
Common mistake installing the wrong bulb in there , glad you found the problem
