1969 Dodge Dart GTS 440 Road Test
« on: April 16, 2005 - 07:15:49 PM »
Here is the first of several pages I have of a road test of a 1969 440 Dart GTS. Tested by Drag Racing Magazine, June, 1969. After a change to wider tires (the originals were E-70x14s) and nothing else, they ran a 12.7 sec @ 112 1/4 mile!

Here is page two (of five). Boy, would I love to own this car (even if it doesn't have power steering). The rest of this road test will be coming up soon.

Looks good I can actually read it.

Good right up on the "Underated 440'S hp" I KNEW! it was making 400hp+  :grinyes:  Always good to hear the 440 being up there with the great Muscle car engines in the 0-60mph zone and always there or there abouts in the file 1/4 mile test.  :driving: 8)

Glad you like the test. I am going to post another article with a list of the actual horsepower of '60s/early '70s muscle car engines. The "375" hp 4440 was actually making about 410 hp!
Here is page 3... two more to go:

Mannnnnnnnnn thats awesome!! 12.70! With 14" rubber bands!  :o :eekbig: :D 0-60mph in 5.9 so with a little work, headers, ehxaust bigger carb and bigger tires you'd be looking at mid-low 5 second 0-60mph times and low 12's to high 11 1/4 miles!  8) :guitar:  :worship:

Wonder what weight difference is between the Dart and a Challenger, could take that weight and for every 100lbs the Challenger would go 0.100 seconds slower, I think thats correct, well, theres some method 0.010 or something either way I love my 440 EVEN more.  ;D

Thanks for posting that mate.  ;)

Dart's usually were lighter than Challengers (and Dusters are even lighter than Darts).

Yeah, about improving the times... they said just adding a bigger carb would help because the stock one is only 580 cfm. 440s can easily use more cfm than that! I had a 500-cfm on my 273!

When upgrading to a bigger carb what else is need to run it? Nothing? Just a good tune or do the insides "need" to be messed with?

I would go bigger maybe 650-cfm but I want to leave the insdes alone.

Does bigger carb always mean more hp?

Yeah, a bigger carb would add some hp. An aftermarket cam would also help because the stock 440 cam is not a radical one. Headers, too, would help. And that 440 Dart had a 3.55:1 rear axle... 3.91s should cut down the 1/4 mile time!

Actually 440 AVS's have the same size throttle blades as a 750cfm AFB carb.
340 and 383 AVS's have the same size blades a 625cfm AFB's.

So the standard carb I'm running is more than enough for a stock engine?  :grinyes: :grinno:
