Stuck tie rod end
« on: April 29, 2014 - 07:35:41 PM »
Hey guys what are you using to pop tie rod ends apart, and stuff like the stud on pitman arms and idler arms. Pickle forks are a no-no ofcourse but what else when heat and hammers dont work? :P

LOL guess I'm just too big or fat to swing it under the car on my back, was hoping for a proper tool or pullers. I spent the weekend with heat, hammers and pickle forks on a air hammer with no luck, had to remove steering box and idler arm and haul it to the shop press to get the drag link free. :banghead: Oh well I won. :bigshades:

A trick my old man showed me, lo, these many years ago, is that you take that 4lb hammer CP referred to and you use it by holding it behind the far side of the tie rod enclosure as a buck and using another BFH, you crank it a few good ones, sandwiching it between the 2 hammers. Usually a few, full blows will pop it loose. Good luck and get a taller jack!

Auto Zone & others have a loan-a-tool kit for suspension

this looks like the item I used on tie rod/idler & pitman arm....even found a way to use on ball joints

That looks just like the one I rented, wouldve worked but their wasnt enough space between the drag link and pitman arm. Seems to have been overtightend. Thanks anyways.

I can relate to this , when I was a kid I was told to hit it with a hammer well years went by pounding on joints with a hammer , never got one apart , I thought it was a myth , then one day maybe I used a heavy enough hammer or got mad enough or it was not very tight in the fitting , don't know but finally it worked , ever since then no prob but I cannot explain why  :pullinghair:
