Electrical problem ruined my day :(

So I took my challenger out and all was well until I started driving back I then noticed my volt gauge go all the way to the right and the car was acting funny.  I pulled over and then looked under the hood but saw nothing wrong,  then I started it up and it was still over charging to the Max so I drove fast got home and turned it off I go check on it a few hours later and now the instrument lights don't work. 

I'm really bad at electrical so please make it as simple for me.  I started by checking the fuses and the appear fine SO did the battery cables and the battery look good.

well either  the alt went bad or the voltage regulator , the light could have burned out , or it could be a problem in the dimmer switch , you can test the bulbs with an ohm meter or just use a jumper on the dimmer switch & see if the lights work again , JSrestorations can replace the dimmer switch if needed , often because the dash lighting is so poor many just leave the switch jumped for the best lighting

Start with checking the plug in connector at the voltage regulator near the firewall

Then check the voltage regulator itself to ensure it is not loose against the firewall.  It has to be bolted tight for a good ground

Check the harness connector at the firewall too.  When you draw that many amps, it ALL goes through that connector, into your gauge, then on to the battery.  They are known for melting and several of my Mopars have had crunchy connections there. Better to check it now than have it surprise you by burning up.

I found on my other Cuda that when the regulator is loose and doesn't have a good ground the amps read low, not high.

Thank you guys I already fixed the interior lighting it's not the switch was bad however I still have a problem with the over charging so I removed the alternator. I suspect its the alternator

I had an over charging problem on my charger this past summer.  It actually turned out to be an issue with the regulator.  I had swapped the one I had for a more original one and that original looking one would overheat.  Swapping back to the ugly looking one fixed the issue.

You might want to see if you can find someone with a known good regulator and swap it in.
