The ACTUAL Horsepower Of Classic Muscle Car Engines
« on: April 16, 2005 - 11:24:33 PM »
I'm sure everyone here knows that many '60s/early '70 muscle car engines were (on purpose) underrated. For instance, the "275-hp" 340 Mopar engine really makes more like 320 hp.
Here is a very good article in a muscle car magazine by Roger Huntington.
Page 4 has the chart of the actual horsepower, but I'll list it here, too (Mopars only):

Engine............ Rated HP.......... Rated Torque....... Actual HP

340-4 bbl..........275@5000 rpm.  340@3200 rpm...  320@5600
440-4 bbl..........375@4600.......  480@3200.........  410@5400
440-6 bbl..........390@4700.......  490@3200.........  430@5600
426-Hemi..........425@5000.......  490@4000.........  470@6000

For some reason, they did not list the 340-6 bbl; I would guess it really made 335-340 hp.

Here is page one of 6:

Soooooo, because I'm taking my stock 375hp into my overall after headers and the other little extra hp gainers to all add up another 25hp (estimated) I'm saying 400hp, I could "now" say 435hp!?!?!?  :dontknow: :grinyes: :grinno: :grinyes: I know the only true way is to get a dyno but this is just for overall hp the higest sound hp numbers one can give, so-to-speak.  ;D 410hp and Torque? 505-510lbs-ft?  ;)

One of the regulars at the weekly car gathering has a '72 Duster with a built 360. He says it dynos at 420 hp and 450 lbs/ft torque. So your engine making the hp you quoted seems very likely!

Yeah, kind of sounds right to me if the 410hp figures are true which I would presume so.  :grinyes:  :worship:

Cheers bud  ;)

My T/A will be on the dyno this week Thursday so I'll let you know what the final numbers are after being tuned. The motor is basically stock but it does have headders, punched 10 over and has a real mild cam. I'll let you know Thursday night !

Okay, it would be good to know what the figure is. I'm sure you would agree that the 290 hp rating is a joke! (Much underrated.)

I sure hope it is or else the joke will be on me !  :banghead: I hope it's much higher but I'll find out in a few days. Of course this is an on car dyno so we'll need to figure it out by power to the rear wheels.

True, rear wheel horsepower is of course less than hp taken before the rear wheels.
If the true gross hp is about 340, and net is about 290-300, I would guess the rear wheel hp is somewhere around 230-260. That's just a guess though.
