Trouble taking steering column apart

Among the growing list of things needing to be repaired before driving my car is the ignition tumbler. The tumbler is no longer happy with the key. So I removed the steering wheel, crush can and turn signal assy. I removed the circlip holding the upper bearing in place but cannot get the upper bearing support off. According to the many sites I visited on the subject that second black section should slide off revealing the lock thingy with notches in it. I can't get it to move. Is there some magic to getting this part off?

Assuming you removed the three phillips screws the upper collar should slide off, there is a company selling a puller but I've never used one & I've taken allot of columns apart... Insert a screwdriver in the T/S lever location & carefully pry a little & see if it pops free... Once you get the collar off you get to the steering lock plate, it has a lock ring hiding a roll pin... Some guys have had success getting the ring off, most times it gets cut... I've never seen a roll pin move without the ring so if you have to cut it don't be to concerned...

The brg is splined onto the shaft use a couple of screwdrivers & pry it up gently , below that there is a chrome ring around the hub on the lock plate , pry the chrome ring up & there is a roll pin to drive out & the lock plate will slide off , then you can remove the lock arm retainer & get to the push pin for the lock cylinder , it will only depress in the on position , once depressed the lock will pull out

Put the key in the lock when you push the pin in, then it comes out.

Thanks guys. After struggling with the collar I had dinner and a beer then went into the garage with a small pry bar and a good size screw driver. I Carefully placed them on either side of the collar and gave a little push and it just came off with no drama. Must be the beer!
