just making sure (L.A. engine balance)
« on: June 08, 2014 - 02:50:16 PM »
Just making sure I have my ducks in a row. Its been awhile since I've messed with small block mopars. My converter has no weights, just a drain plug. The balancer on my 340 has no external weight, just a drilled spot for balancing. My flexplate has no weights...I should be good to go correct?

Are all those parts original to THAT engine?  If so, you should be good.  If not, you won't know for certain.  Without looking at the crank it seems like you should be good.  But if someone snuck a cast crank in there, then put the non balanced accessories around it you're going to have a bad time.  Do you know for sure if your crank is cast or forged?

Ill pull the pan tonight. I assume the cast crank is external balance and the forged is internal? Everything I have for the car appears to be internal stuff.

My 360 is external balance.  From my limited experience, the 340s are internal.  When you see the crank, that will tell you what to do.

340's up until 72 or 73 were internal.  The external balance 340's had a damper that said "cast crank only".  The sure fire way is to look at the crank.  On a side note, I got a smokin deal on a 71 340 years ago because the owner (ford guy) had a cast crank damper on the forged crank motor and wondered why the "piece of **** Mopar' shook so bad.

all 340 s  had a steel crank & are internal balance until 72  , the damper would have cast crank on it & the converter should have no weight so as long as the crank is stell you are good

It is in fact a forged crank....so neutral flexplate, neutral converter, neutral balancer, plus forged crank equals success!?
