Best Performance Heads for 340???

Has anyone used the "Edelbrock Performer RPM" or "Mopar Commando" aluminum high performance heads on their 340???
What is the major difference in them, if any, and is one much better than the other for horsepower gains?

If you're going for the stock look.. the T/A heads w/ the offset rockers. They are the "U" casting I believe w/ the offset rockers. This allows you to open up the heads, which you cannot do w/ the X-heads. Both the X-heads and T/A's have the 2.02's but the allowances for porting provides an unbelievable flow rate vs the X-heads.  :o

Done right.. they will not outperform the alum heads.. but not that far behind either. Ported & polished T/A heads on a bullet 340 shortblock will smoke most bigblocks in the 1/4 mile.  ;)

Problem?? yep, just try to find them.. and you'll pay close to the aluminum heads. I have the T/A heads and will keep them as long as I own my Cuda.  8)

try the 308 heads, CP can tell you more about them.

1965 barracuda. Was 273/2 904 car had 440 360 in plans

The  308 is about the best stock head ,the True T/A heads are very difficult to get , there are a 3 of choices for the small block heads , With the  W 2,5 8,9  & the P series heads from Mopar , Indy , Batten , the new small block Hemi heads , Indy & last eddy
 I really need more experience with the small block heads , I have held the W series heads in my hands & the new W8&9 are awesome but require a special block as do the P series heads , Don from FBO will have a better idea being a sprint car racer  on which heasdsa perform the best for a given application

Thanks very much for all the info....I'm still up in the air as to what I'm going to do, ported iron heads, aluminum...ETC?? But I really like the stock look of an engine...orange paint etc....With some beefed horsepower hiding out inside!!!!!!!

This is just my .02, but if you are trying to decide between alumium or iron heads, don't automatically assume that an aluminum head will make more power than an iron head.  In fact from everything that I have read, eveyone that I have talked to, and my own limited experience, if all things are equal ( port size,  port shape, and valves etc) and the only difference is the material that the heads are made from (iron or aluminum), the iron heads will actually make more power.  I know that goes contrary to what most people think, but essentially heat=power, and aluminum heads will dissapate much more heat, much faster than an iron head will.  The iron head will hold that heat in the combustion chamber better than an aluminum head.  Where the aluminum heads make their money is that they are soooooo much lighter than an iron head, and it takes less power to get less weigt moving to a certain speed.  When you are talking about saving that 50-75 lbs on an all out race car where you are trimming weight anyway, aluminum is definetely the way to go, but it isn't necessarily the way to go on a car still wearing the orginal sheet metal.  You should look at the setup you want to run and find a head that fits what you want the car to do.  Maybe thats an aluminum head, but maybe it's an iron head too.

I agree 100% Cuda Cody !! A lot of alum head have more flow but flow doesn`t = HP unless the engine is big enough or runs at high enough rpm to use it

 The 308 heads were used from 87-92 on trucks , you have to pull the intake or valve cover , 308 is cast twice on the heads 1 on top of 1 intake runner & 1 under the intake ports on the bottom surface but you need a mirror to see it  the last 3 #s of the casting are 308

I take it that the 308 heads are off a 360 being that they are off a 87-92 truck? Are the valves the bigger size like the 340 had, if not will they take the bigger valve(s)  and in particular will the chamber size be bigger because it's a 360 head?
The reason that I ask about the chamber size is what if these heads are ported and polished will it lower the engine compression ratio as opposed to having the 340 heads ported?? Or would you notice much of a difference.
  I know that I've got lots of questions about head selection, but you guy's/gals always have the answers.  >>>Very Much Appreciated............."Tim"
