How Big Wheels/Slicks on Cuda
« on: June 23, 2002 - 10:26:24 AM »
I have a 1972 440 'Cuda. There is currently some centerlines that were on there when I bought it. The back ones are BIG and scrub ( :( ) and the front ones are skinny, which I don't like. (It drives funny and I have power steering.)

I want to upgrade to a set of "Torq Thrust II's" and badass tires. I would REALLY like to drive around on slicks but this car will be driven alot. Is that a bad idea?

Anyways, they make Torq Thrusts in 15x6,15x7,15x8, 15x10. What wheel sizes are optimal in the front and back (I don't like skinnies up front)? More importantly, how big of tires can I run? Slicks seem to be rated different in size... how big of slicks can I run? (The car has not been tubbed or anything)

Slicks on the street? BAD idea! Since they have no grooves in the tread, if you get on any kind of water you will be basically hydroplaning and have no traction , forwards or sideways. The thin sidewall on a slick also makes for lousy cornering, and the car feels squirrely going down the highway too.

As for wheels and tires, you can run a 15x8 on the back if it has at least 4" backspacing.  That's what I run with a 275R60x15 tire, and it's close but works okay. On the front I would go with a 15x7 and a 235R60x15.

8s will fit best in the rear, you probably have 10s now if they rub , might get 8s in front too 7 for sure , I like the lok of the Torque Thrusts

Got any plans for your old centerlines? I like the look of centerlines and would be interested if you want to sell them.

I think I'm gonna keep em, might throw them on my RR one day. One or two of them has been repaired, you probably wouldnt want them anyways. ;)

Your car looks great with those wheels/tires. What sizes did you end up getting?

275 is about as big as you can go in the rear without rubbing.  Airbags might give you a bit more clearance though.
2nd place is for the 1st place loser!

Thanks for the comments, guys! I get comments on my wheels more than anything.

I went with a 235 in the front and 255 in the back.
