Loud exhaust system
« on: July 06, 2014 - 08:31:26 AM »
I'm trying to get my sound right. Now it is way to loud. Measured inside the car and I got 97dB's inside (convertible with top up), PINA to drive far with it, can't play music or talk. What I have on the now is a Magnaflow 2,5" X-pipe stainless system, very bad rusty headers and Flowmaster 50 series mufflers. I used to have Magnaflow mufflers and in an attempt to get the volume down I changed to Flowmasters, it got better, but not enough. It's a stock 340 engine.

In my garage I now have a new system, Flowmaster 2,5" X-pipe non-stainless, TTI shorty ceramic coated headers, no mufflers yet. Some told me my system is loud because of the stainless steel (thats why I bought the regular system). I need to choose my mufflers now and need some recommendations, should I go with the Flowmasters I have and add the short round muffler before the exhaust tips or just change the Flowmasters to something else?
I want it pretty quiet, if I feel the need to make noise I have a Harley with straight pipes    :grinno:

I just put the stock exhaust system on my 71 340 from Accurate Exhaust and it is quiet as a church mouse inside. I do have the mufflers and resonators on.

Sorry, my new exhaust system is not Flowmaster, it is TTI, just looked at the boxes. It's made for just one muffler, in place of the original resonator.
On the stock system, what is the purpose of the resonator? And, what is the difference of having the mufflers in the back, does it change the sound?

Info how resonator works:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/muffler4.htm

If you want to quiet it down, just put in a standard muffler in or get the quietest performance muff.

I have MagnaFlow 2.5 with headers in my 440 vert and don't think it's too loud at all.
But then again, I love my music loud.

If you can't feel it deep within, it's not loud enough.  :ylsuper:

I have stock 70 340 exhaust manifolds on my 418 with TTI 2.5" H pipe system and Tips.
Running Dynomax Ultraflow welded. They are not quiet but I like it!
I added Sound deadening (Stinger Roadkill) and ACC Mass Backed Carpet and that quieted the inside a lot.  :2thumbs:

Both of your Cuda's sounds really nice! Louder than mine, here is a link to mine:
https://vimeo.com/100041878

I don't mind my sound from behind the car, maybe the problem isn't the mufflers? 97dB's inside is LOUD, a rock concert is 100dB (well, except for Ted Nugent then...),
I checked if my system touches the floor somewhere, but it dosen't, maybe it's just the stainelss steel and the really bad headers? You can hear, even on the simple video that the sound has a ping to it, it resonates a lot.

She sounds and looks great!!!  :ylsuper:

Do you have sound deadener under the carpet and dash?

BTW, The person behind the steering wheel revving it up needs to smile while sitting in and running that beautiful Chally.

I don't think it's the stainless... I have headers & all stainless Pypes exhaust & it actually sounds pretty much like the stock systems I've heard. I did opt for their quieter mufflers.

Nope, just the carpet, I will do all that once I'm taking it apart completely. But it's to much noise to be just a insulation problem, I had 5 other e-bodys before, none of them was this noisy...

That my son Mitch, he will be smiling soon when he gets to drive it!
He is 16, I'm practice driving with him now.

The insulation will help but I guess since you've owned several e-bodies, you have some knowledge. Were the others convertible? Might be something to that too.

Well good for Mitch.
I taught my son years ago how to drive. I remember the first day. We had my dodge truck. I put him in the drivers seat with me in the passenger seat. The truck was parked but running. I told him to put the foot on the brake and shift into drive.
He then asked, "uh dad, which one is the brake?"  :scared:  :22yikes:  :banghead:  :smilielol:

Needless to say, He's been driving for 6 years and is an excellent driver.  :ylsuper:

I am installing a Magnaflow 2.5" system right now, what I am adding is a pair of 6"x6" race mufflers either side of the gas tank, these are a straight through round muffler/resonator. i want to just take that crackle off it a little, these 6x6's are supposed to take about 6 Db off :dunno:, they are about the only thing I can fit in there without major tailpipe mods

2 were convertibles, they are somewhat noisier but this one must have some other problem, resonance probably, maybe that Fatmat or Dynamat will help.

He then asked, "uh dad, which one is the brake?"  :scared:  :22yikes:  :banghead:  :smilielol:

6 dB's is a lot, I hope I can make my new TTI system to work with just one muffler...
