Fender does not match the rest of the body
« on: July 06, 2014 - 01:04:24 PM »
I scratch my passenger side fender a few months ago the car is vitamin orange and was painted in 2000.
I brought it to a body shop and he said he could match the paint I expected him to paint the fender and blend into the door. He only painted the fender which now is a  different shade than the rest of the car. Anyone here answer question for me. When you paint a fender shouldn't you blended into the door?

I haven't paid him,the insurance company gave me $1900. What I'm going to do is bring it to another body shop that does restorations on muscle cars and have him redo the fender along with the door. The reason I'm a little annoyed it was not a matter of money, if it costs more to do the job right I would've taken the money out of my pocket, thank you

May I suggest that you go back to the original shop and work it out with him? He's already got time and money into this job and you're preventing him from being able to resolve the issue. If he can't/won't blend the door and make you happy, then, roll on, but don't be surprised to find yourself in a legal situation if you just walk away. Just my  :2cents:

I agree with you but I feel very uncomfortable about giving him back the car. When I picked up my car the passenger side door did not close all the way. When I got home I noticed it before I put it in the garage. I drove the car back to his shop and I said the passenger door does not close. He told me he did not touch the passenger side door, and to bring the car back to him next week and he will fix it. I agree with you that it will be a legal problem but I feel very uncomfortable about giving him back the car. Before I brought the car up to him I had a scratch on the fender, the paint look as though it matched and I had no trouble closing my passenger side door. Now the fender does not match the rest of the paint, and my passenger side door does not close correctly.
What body shop would paint a fender on a classic car without blending it in to the door.
I'm going to bring it to another body shop and get his opinion. Like I said I feel very uncomfortable about giving them back the car.

That is pretty obvious difference.  Need to blend the hood too.   :dunno:

Do you know itf it`s single stage or clear coat paint? Blending single stage is difficult to get a nice blend.

I'm going to drive up there this morning and talk to him. I really can't see him saying to me okay bring it back and I'm going to paint the fender the door and the hood to make it match, for that matter he would've done it the first time. I know nothing about painting a car. Everyone tells me that no matter how many years ago a car was painted that a good painter can match paint. I'm not sure if that's true or not true. If I bring to other body shops they will be able tell me whether he did a good job a bad job a right job. I want to thank everyone for responding because it is frustrating to have a fender a different color than the rest of car. Come to think of it! I think I would be happier to have a scratch on the car at least the paint matched.

Not only would the hood have to be painted but he would then have to blow in the top of the left fender to finish it off.

I just went down there to talk to him. He told me to bring the car back and he will blend it into the door. He also asked me if I could pay him for the work he has a already done.
He explained to me that the car was painted at different times and the body does not match. I told him if that's the case why didn't he match the fender to the passenger side door. I now get the impression if he painted the door along with the fender he would've had to take off the bottom molding on the door Mirror the door handles and replaced the decal. He wants me to send the check for $1049 for the work he has done. He's a nice man but he should've done the job correctly the first time. Would any of you bring the car back to him?

I don't know how things are done where you are, but Im surprised that you received your car before paying the body shop.  Unless you had some agreement to pay later.  Did you get an estimate from one body shop for $1900 then found this one that would do the job for $1049?  So insurance paid you the higher amount and you pocket the rest?  I'd say give him another go at it.  Since the job was done and you accepted your car back, I think you should pay him.  Otherwise, if you were not satisfied, the car should have stayed until it was done correctly, then you pay for the work.  Not all body shops are equal.  The saying, you get what you pay for, may apply here.  If his written estimate says blend into door, then he did not fulfill his obligation.  Im just not sure if we are getting the whole story here.
I agree, the paint does not match and that needs to be taken care of.   :2cents:

He first told me that he can match the paint! I told him that I received almost 1900. I was not trying to get a cheap paint job. He told me that it would cost less than 1900.Saving money was the furthest thing from my mind.
After he had the car he called me back and said that there's a few different colors on the car. I said to him I assume that you're going to blend the fender right into the door. That's the way I left it. He did not give me an estimate and I assume by what everyone is telling me that he should've gone into the door. If everyone agrees that you don't paint a fender without blended into the door what reason would he have not to have done that, other than to make a quick 1,000.
