You'll get a lot of different answers to that question...

I'm by no means a paint expert, but I recently painted my 71 Challenger using an epoxy primer made by Southern Polyurethanes (SPI). They are in GA and will ship product free. Very reasonably priced and my buddy who did the painting on the car was very impressed with it after using it for the first time.

2nd on spi and the owner Barry who does tech support if you need it. Also their forums area a wealth of knowledge, this is my first time painting but my dad who has painted a dozen cars was really impressed with the product. I am using their full line, epoxy, 2k primer and single stage topcoat, all quality items....

Paint companies always recommend using their complete line and not mixing brands althouth myself and others have done it with no problems. I use PPG almost exclusively and like their products and use their DP epoxy primer.

Most companies do but SPI doesn't. I used the whole line because I really liked the service and my local jobber wasn't a big help. Most people who use SPI use the epoxy primer and clear coat then use a ppg, etc topcoat from what I've read in the forums..

Thanks for the replies. I'm bouncing between PPG primers and SPI.
