    Well that may be possible -- I did ask if it was a full report and she told me that it was everything that he "owned" ... If there is a cut-off date , it seems it may be right after the information I am looking for.....

    Spoke with a VERY helpful lady at the Ministry today.... Unfortunately, still didn't find the info I am looking for but she did do searches for me that normally would have cost me a bit of $$$

    She was able to tell me that my dad had a plate attached to a vehicle Nov '74 but that it was the 1975 Plymouth Valiant :( weird thing is a new plate was issued for the Valiant 4 years later as well ( at least I find that a bit weird )

    Hey Burnt Orange, I would love to hear the details of what you went through regarding the mix-up with the Valiant - If you could email me that would be great!


    Wouldn't that mean IF my dad had bought the '74 Cuda new that he would have had it a VERY short time?? Would love to get people's thoughts on all this.

    I bought the car new in Victoria, BC. 

    I am looking at the Build Sheet, Vehicle Shipping Order from Chrysler and the Sales Agreement from the dealer.  They indicate Plymouth Barracuda. 
    For some reason, the Province of BC registration has the Make listed as Valiant and Model as Barracuda. Where they got that from is a mystery to me.
     :dunno:


    I was in no hurry to correct anything because, as a twenty year old male, the insurance was significantly cheaper for a Valiant than a Barracuda.
    Several years I benefited from this error!   :bigsmile:
    Sometime in the ensuing 44 years the registration was corrected by someone and the Make is now listed as Plymouth, Model Barracuda.

    Oh ok ! Yeah, I am sure that would make a big insurance difference.... I assume the V.I.N that they had and everything was correct though, just the description was wrong.... Coincidence, although now I am not so sure my dad owned a Valiant....

    If he did own it ( which I would tend to believe the ministry paperwork because governments never make mistakes  :crazy: )... then that would imply he owned 2 cars at the same time which I know isn't correct.... ( The paperwork shows the Valiant from late '74 and then a new plate was issued for it early '78.. )

    In case everybody didn't realize, that is me in the photo :) born in '72 --- I would say I am definitely older than 2 and maybe as old as 5 in the picture..
    that would mean the car was his anywhere from '74 to '77 ---- ( all while he apparently had a Valiant on the road ?? ) (  my mom also believes he never bought it brand new... )

    My brain hurts.......

    Get the info on the two Valiants, if the VIN on either one starts with a B that ain't no Valiant...

    The info / VIN is a Valiant and it is the same car that shows up right after each other on the report - I assume this has to do with the two plates it was assigned over the ownership....

    Why another set of plates after years I am not sure about.... Why he has a Valiant when he should have a 'Cuda also has me confused ( and yes I am 100% sure I am standing in front of his car in the picture )

    Wondering if it was registered to my grandfather for some reason at the time and that is why it doesn't show up on my dad's info....

    Ok so my lack of knowledge in this area is definitely shining through now ...

    I was just reading a bit online and am I wrong when I say the Plymouth Valiant and Duster were very similar cars / VIN started with a V for both??
    The VIN decoding site didn't list the Duster but I saw it on another site while I was surfing...


    I realize the car that is causing me all these headaches is a brown Plymouth Duster that my dad used to own... >:(

    Does this make sense to anyone with the knowledge base I am clearly lacking in this area? lol

    First digit V can be a Valiant, Duster or Scamp All Plymouth A bodies...

    Same as first digit L can be a Dart or a Demon.. Both Dodge A bodies..

    But the following letters break it down

    VL can be a Duster or Valiant
    VH will be a Scamp
    VS will be a Duster 340

    VL23 is a Valiant 2dr
    VL41 is a Valiant 4dr
    VL29 is a Duster

    When I first owned my Challenger I also had a Gremlin. Plates were switched back and forth a lot, sometimes with the knowledge of the DMV, sometimes...not so much. Could your father have went to the DMV to get plates for the Cuda and used the Valiant/Duster VIN?

    I am not sure i guess anything possible at this point.

    I am gonna go back to the drawing board and see if I can do a bit more research into his car history / timeline so I can try and figure it out...

    Funny thing ...... My dad also owned a gremlin for a very short time ....
    It is one of the cars that also doesn't show up in his driving history.

    you mention in your post that VH would designate a scamp?

    The VIN in question is VH29C5B..... I am starting to doubt everything I was told / know about all this... I was always under the impression he had a Duster...

    I needed to clarify my post, VH would be a Scamp in 70-71 model year, your dads car was a 75 model year and so it's kinda an oddity as far as my knowledge goes... I can tell you its a 225 6 cylinder Plymouth Sport Roof ( Duster style sloped roof not a Dart style roof) 75 model year built at Hamtramck Michigan...

    So a bit of an update on the search for the V.I.N

    Some general info for people searching in Ontario for this kind of info -- The ministry emailed me back when I asked them how far back their database went...

    Due to computer storage capacity, in the early 1980's, driver and vehicle records that were inactive or older than ten years were purged in compliance with the retention schedule at that time.

    The info the ministry must have is inaccurate... The photo is definitely from after spring of '75..... They list my father putting a plate on a '75 Duster on Nov of '74 and then a new plate on it in '78 .... The first plate must have been the 'Cuda.... right???

    I have another email response back to the lady at the ministry in regards to the records... waiting to hear back from her... hopefully I will soon...

    Any more thoughts from anyone would be greatly appreciated...

    You might want to be careful.  If they found out your dad registered the car wrong for cheaper fees, they may come after you for the difference plus 40 years of interest.   :roflsmiley:

    He could have registered and titled under your Mom's or you Grandma's od Grandpa's name too, to save on insurance.

    After I heard Kobi's story, I told my kids that I would never want them to find or keep my cars once they are gone.
    I enjoy these cars because I know everything about them. To my adult grown children, they would be a pain in the butt, taking up garage space.
