Question for you -- new member here / need help
« on: July 07, 2014 - 02:59:38 PM »
Hi there everyone,

I was hoping someone would be able to help me out and answer a question for me. I have posted a picture of a car my dad used to have but I am just not sure of the year of it and I was hoping someone with the Plymouth knowledge would be able to give me some insight as to what it is???

Thanks in advance!!!

( This is the only picture I have of it at the moment but I am trying to track down some more of them.. )

72-74 type side markers. Not exactly sure of the availabilty of that stripe.
Can't see how far the bumpers are sticking out to make it a 73-74.

Thanks for the quick response / input on the age range...

Is '74 the last year ? I seem to remember my dad telling me his car was the last year .....

Anyone else who can add to this would be greatly appreciated as I want to learn as much as I can about this car.

Agreed, and the stripe is 73-74... 72 was similar but the stripe didn't get as wide in the rear it followed the body & was about 2.5" front to back...

`73-4 stripe, `cuda hood but still could be a base Barracuda model with the hood as an option or added later.

Sounds like a plan... Any idea who he sold the car to? Where? When? Any idea who that guy sold it to? Who put it in storage 20 years ago? Was it sold to a scrap yard?  If you have three leads and a candy bar all you need is graham crackers & marshmallows to make smores..

You have Robert John Bardo to thank for the way vehicle ownership transfer info is protected these days.. This loser used DMV records to find and murder Actress Rebecca Schaeffer on 18 July 1989...  Following her death, the Screen Actors Guild got the DMV to restrict access to records in hopes of preventing further such incidents

So I have come to learn that all 1974 'cudas were built in the same plant - Hamtramck, Michigan so my next question is this ---

Would the V.I.N have a B or 2 as the 7th "digit" because of this or would it be different if it was exported to Canada? ( a P or 8 ) ?

I have seen these numbers / letters on two different sites and I am not sure which would be correct.

Could someone tell me what the 7th "number" would be based on the information above?

Thanks again for all your help guys! I have been made a big 'Cuda fan in just a week on this site!!

hate to say it, but without the actual VIN# or previous owner info, you will never track it down and you are shooting in the dark. they made almost 12,000 Barracuda's in '74, of those @ 5000 were designated special 'Cuda models. how many are around 40 years later? it could have gone anywhere - different state, different country, someones garage or barn, someones scrap heap, made into a parts car, restored to new, who knows. you need #s to research it.

any old paperwork he left around (registrations? insurance?) that might have the VIN# on it? maybe you can do a title search in your state based on his name (there are companies you can pay to do this too if it's that important to you)? a pic of the license plate might help you back track it through the DMV?

don't want to discourage you for sure, but you need more data (#s) to get you going in the right direction. I wish you the best of luck.

I was lucky enough that my dad parked his in the back 40 @ '87 and forgot about it

Hey ec_co

I realize what you are saying and I am working on getting the V.I.N number and really feel that I can get it / complete the first step of finding out what happened to this car, but I was curious as to the designation regarding it being "exported" to Canada -- I am from Canada not the U.S so that is why I asked that question.

Thanks again for the "best of luck" !! I know I am going to need it but I am willing to do what I can to find out what I can about this car.

B is the hamtrack plant designation.
That will be the same regardless of export.

There's another member here who was searching for his father's car about a year ago, and he was successful. His success involved a lot of diligent research and an insane amount of luck. Some things you can try in order to find the VIN are:
  • Bank records, if the purchase involved a loan
  • Insurance records
  • Contacting the selling dealer
