Hey Brad, in November of 2012 I set out to find my dad's car (70 Challenger T/A).  I tried a lot of different things (banks, insurance companies, ownership trail, DMV with a picture of car and license plate) but came up empty.... I finally found some loan documentation that had the VIN on it and was lucky enough that Barry Washington, with challengertaregistry.com, had it in his registry.  Long story short, I purchased the car and shipped it back to the states from Japan.  So it can be done. Talk to anyone that was friends with your dad or family (uncle) and see what they remember, write every detail down, the smallest things could come in handy later.  Search high and low for more pictures, documentation (can be DMV inspection, registration, insurance paperwork, loan paperwork etc). I know it is frustrating , I did a lot of work for about a month and came up empty until I found the VIN. It seemed like everyone I talked to said "find the VIN and I might be able to help".  You can read my search thread on this site in the classics section.  I actually came here to try to put out feelers and get some help, just like you are doing.  There are a lot of great guys/gals on here that helped coach me and encourage me during my search.  Good luck and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Any idea who the member was? I am gonna search the forum and see if I can find the thread but I wondered if you knew. Thought it would be great to "pick his brain" on this as well...

The man that helped Koby is Barry Washington, he runs Hamtramck Historical & The T/A Registry... He has a fairly large collection of data about Mopars in general & specifically the Trans Am car...
Koby had a few things going for him, his dads car was a very high profile car between being a T/A & Plum Crazy... & more importantly he knew the VIN....  Not saying you shouldn't search just saying as others have pointed out, old documents should be a big part of your search....Registrations, Bank docs, Insurance docs, an old repair order.... Tire Shop receipt, battery receipt... If you find a VIN there are a  number of registries like Barry's website... Which can be found here...      http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/    BRW Barry is currently in the process of moving so he won't be much help right now..

Oh, and a link to Koby's Searching for dad's old car thread....   http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=89547.msg0#new

So good news!!! ( and some general information for people VIN searching in Ontario )

I was able to go to the ministry and with my dad's driver's licence number and $12, I was able to get a RIN history that showed all vehicles he
has ever had registered under his licence. ( shows VIN / make and Year of vehicles )

... The bad news ... The 1974 'Cuda was not listed :(

Apparently according to the ministry people, they are saying the car must have been either registered to a relative ( his dad perhaps ) or sometimes the dealerships put the vehicle under their RIN when there is financing...

The sorta good news ... I have 7 plate numbers that also came on that report and for $12 each I can run them and it will show all vehicles that have ever been linked to those plates.... First, it's time for a little process of elimination with some old photos and the plate list...

Wish me luck!

I don't know if you guys / gals are interested in updates on how this search goes or not but I really enjoy being on this forum and am looking forward to updating as things go along in my search...

Congrats on the progress, and I'm definitely interested in updates. Can you do a search on your grandfather's license number and see what cars he's owned?

Yeah it looks like as long as you have the drivers licence number and $12 you can do it for anyone ( which is surprising although there isn't any "harmful" info you can get....

That is another way I am gonna try and get this VIN is by talking with my relatives and trying to get my grandfather's licence number...

I had done this on my car aswell. Unfortunatelly they don't give you the persons contact info in Ontario. You will get thier name and the town they lived in when the car was in their name.

I know who owned my car, I know where he lived 40 years ago and my trail ends there. I don't know where he is now.

Ontario certainly had good records that helped us verify My uncles All original Mach 1.

For what it is worth, my Barracuda is listed with the B.C. DMV as a Valiant.  Go figure?
Did your research turn up any Valiants?

Actually , yes it did

It was the only car on the report that was on there twice for some reason....

I believe my father owned one though so.... and the V.I.N is clearly not a 'cuda...

I thought Ontario's computer system only dated back to about 1976 or something like that, meaning they have no records prior to that :dunno:
