Steering Shaft Length.
« on: July 08, 2014 - 12:26:40 AM »
Ok, here I go again....

I have two steering shafts...I am not sure which one is for power steering.

I had read that the shaft for power steering should be 40.75 inches. Neither one measures that.

Both shafts have been collapsed, so the lengths can be adjusted.

But the lower end of the shafts are also different.

So any thoughts on which one is the correct one to use in a power steering car????

Jason,
From what I've learned, the shorter one is used for power steering.
Since you say both shafts have been collapsed, the real time length at this point isn't anything to worry about. It can be pulled out to the length you need.
At least this is what I ran into. I had both shaft lengths but stayed with non-power steering one.

Thanks Brad.  I have sanded down the shaft and think I can get it on...I think I am using the right shaft, (bottom one in the pics above) just want to confirm the length.

I was hunting a new steering shaft for my GC some months ago and I measured the one I found, just below 41 inch.

And that was for power steering?

That is what I have read as well.

If that is the case, I guess I will have to lengthen the shorter shaft that I have (the primered one).

Ok, I did some digging on this and I am certain that the shaft on the bottom of the pic below is a power steering shaft and the top is the standard shaft.

Some good info in this thread. http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=A12&Number=4316117&fpart=&PHPSESSID=

I have managed to get this shaft to 40.75 inches, which I believe is the correct length. So I am going to go with that one.

The shaft has been collapsed, but is still really tight...I had to hammer it to get to the correct length and can not really move it in or out now, so I think I am good.

You should be good. As I mentioned earlier, the shorter shaft for power steering.
And any movement from the collapse part (in or out) won't matter because it won't move once installed anyway.
