1970 Alternator/Starter (help with part #'s)
« on: July 08, 2014 - 02:14:25 PM »
Hi everyone,

Can someone help me with the correct part numbers for a 1970 alternator / starter?  I do not have the white books yet to verify but is part number #2875560/2875553 correct for a 1970 383 starter?

Also can someone provide me with the correct alternator part number?  Is part #3438172?  What about the pulley number?

Thank you in advance

I couldn't find those specific starter numbers in my books. The closest was 2875 560 for the starter. I also saw a 2875 558 which was for a solenoid seal. That alternator number did show up but it looks to be a stamped number. Check out the picture of the page. There was no reference made to engine, only to amperage. The pulley numbers are also listed.

The barrel end of the starter is  stamped 2875 560, it dated with the week/year coding, ie: 110 is the eleventh week of 1970. 2875 553 is the part number cast into the case part of the starter.  It is coded with the star pattern code: ie: the year cast into the center, 69, 70, 71, etc.  and 12 pie shapes around the center, each representing a month of the year.  The date on the barrel must predate the month date or be in the same month date as what is cast into the case part of the starter.

A non A/C alternator will be a 3438 172 alternator.  The dating for that part is stamped in the same area as the 3438 172 stamping, and is the week/year date type.  The other half of the alternator has a cast part number: 2095 191, it uses that star pattern date like the case on the starter.  The date on the 172 must predate the 191 casting or be in the same month as it. An A/C alternator is 3438 178

How is the carb coming along?
