So, give me your impressions: Hotel & Dinner
« on: July 14, 2014 - 10:25:19 AM »
Another Carlisle weekend has come and gone, and already the "ViperFamily" is talking about next year.

Hotel.

Hotels continue to be a challenge, and 2015 will be no different.  So, as it requires reserving at the earliest possible chance, let's start that discussion.

The Quality Inn in New Cumberland is anything but fancy.  This year I was glad to see the pool didn't have a scum layer on top.  I also didn't hear any complaints of non-functioning A/C units or the like.  The hot water was out briefly on Friday evening (for the entire hotel,) but was up and running in the morning.  While it's certainly no Hyatt or similar, it's awfully cheap, as some members paid less than $90 a night, a rarity during a Carlisle weekend for ANY hotel in the area.  And of course, that remote parking lot which we mostly had to ourselves both nights is something which is VERY hard to find anywhere else in the area.

So do I bite the bullet and book there again for next year?  Do we take to our Expedias and the like early to get better rates?  (I'll do that for sure this time...)  Or do we go back to the drawing board?

Dinner.

I personally thought Dodge City did a good job this year.  4Cruizn and I waited longer than anyone else for our food, but we also ordered from the bar and I think they "misplaced" our plates briefly.  The only complaint I heard was that the waitresses didn't make a second pass for drink orders, but again I wasn't sitting at the main tables so I was somewhat removed from the discussion.  The only other issue was seating - we were about 4 seats shy.  I can't blame the restaurant for that at all, and it all depends on planned attendance for next year, which we won't know for quite some time.

I'd LOVE to do a catered dinner somewhere, but location will be hard to determine, and I think we'd all end up paying a loooot more, but I'm willing to look into it.

So do we book Dodge City again, or look into something new?

This is a club event, and though my wife and I try to handle these reservations on everyone's behalf, we always strive to take everyone into consideration.  So voice your thoughts and suggestions.  Just remember a few things:

Nicer hotel = more money.  No way around it.  Next price point for hotels is $130 a night - trust me, I know.  I've never found a BLOCK of rooms for anywhere between the $100 and $130 range.  From there it's $150 and $170 or so.

The only way dinner goes faster is with a buffet.  Buffet = less selection, and often no alcohol (just based on available restaurants.)  It also usually means not-quite-as-good food.  (And note that the "Your Place" restaurant & buffet we used to go to is out of business, so I'd need to find something new.)  I pitched the idea of booking a brewery next year to 4C, but I think finding one with enough space for us might be tricky.  Still, I'll look into it.

Anyways, sorry this post is long, but I've been doing this for many years now and there's always so much to consider!

The fact I had to go to the bar to get a drink after waiting over 20 minutes with an empty glass stuck in my craw. I didn't feel they were prepared for us, but if the owner can remedy the issue this is a good place otherwise. Perhaps he doesn't understand how much liquid we lose at the fairgrounds

I think we will outgrow the current place Dodge City at the rate we are going!  There were members that didn't come and we still were short a few chairs.  Unless they have a larger area that we can take over, we will need to come up with a new plan!  And I do agree that a buffet is a great idea if we can make it happen and have it at a reasonable price!

The food was very good but there were a few glitches - Ravage not getting his drink, my side of carrots didn't come out until I was nearly done my main plate, Cathy never did get her side of coleslaw. I think one more waitress could have helped the situation a lot. Also I thought the 17% built in gratuity was little much but maybe that's the way it is in PA.

Having a room to ourselves was perfect as we weren't exactly quiet. If we go into another palce and are in a larger room with other people we may not be well received.

Just a thought but could we find a hotel with a room that we could reserve and have a meal catered in? If we did that would we be allowed to have alcohol in that room? And then how much does all that push up the cost? Just thinking out loud.

Thanks Jeff for all you and Ashley do.

It all depends on how many attend? With Neil attending I suspect that caused a few more members to come. Some years we have smaller attendance, some years more?  The restaurant was cool. Food was just fine I thought.
As far as hotels are concerned I have to admit I was skeptical but they have improved it since we last stayed there. I'd be fine with it again.
If we want a change I stayed here in 2013 and loved it,  http://www.parkinn.com/hotel-harrisburgwestpa?csref=se.ggl.pi_cmp3
TONS of semi private park like settings for evening get togethers. The restaurant/bar could even be a great hangout? Or maybe there is a local caterer that could do a pig roast at the hotel?
"Enjoy on-site dining at Pappy K's Alehouse & Big Deck featuring salads, sandwiches, pasta, fresh quality seafood, premium all aged beef and the West Shore's ultimate craft beer experience. And with nightly entertainment it's more than a restaurant…more than a bar…an entertainment venue. "
Jeff, you wouldn't need 4C to drive your Viper home!  :roflsmiley:

Well, I've always heard that 20% is average for gratuity for dinner.  I didn't think the 17% was unfair, personally.

I didn't know about the other side dishes being late/missed, so thanks for letting me know.

We did have a reservation, and being that we were there last year, I think Dodge City had something of an idea what they were in for.  They did better than last year, as we waited a LONG time for food last year.  We also only had one waitress last year.  I agree though that not coming around with another drink order isn't good business for the customer OR the restaurant!

There are a few hotels that offer conference rooms.  And I'm sure I can have a catered meal.  Alcohol I don't know about, but I kinda suspect it'd be okay, since it would be up to the business.  I just remember planning my wedding and how much THAT all cost, so I just fear the price tags I'd be quoted...

Personally I'd love to rent a pavilion or something at a park, but all state parks have strict "no alcohol" policies.

Hey, I'm not complaining about things Jeff. Just throwing it out there. Sounds like they improved it a lot from last year and that's good.

Well we have a whole year to hash out the details and I think we should plan on about the same turnout as this year and possibly more.  We have more members join the site everyday and some I'm sure would come to Carlisle!  I do think we need to watch prices as we don't want it to be too expensive as that could detour members from attending . . .  :dunno:

I say the club Hotel was quite a bargain. I have no complaints. Love the privacy of the back parking lot, and it's right next to the Turnpike for a straight shot into Carlisle.    :burnout:

I skipped the club dinner this year, so I have no comment there. But it's been excruciating having 2+ hour dinners in the past. I really don't have a reasonable solution though. Did you at least have more than one waitress with a bad attitude this year?

No it's alright Murray - I wasn't arguing with ya!  I was thinking that the gratuity thing might be a difference between us and Canada!  :D  lol!

HMMM, 17% built in AND I still gave a $10 tip on my $20 bill? I like to tip well but tell me up front so I know how well.

Food was good, no complaints. I was amusing PURPLE1, Dave's wife and her daughter because she though she might feel funny about sitting with people she didn't know.  I found out that her first 2 boyfriends were gay and she didn't know it OR she turned them gay. She admitted to me and her Mom that she hasn't had sex but she and her boyfriend do "stuff'.  Thank Bill Clinton for clearing that up. I could have used that more in high school.

Hotel was nice, pool looked clean. Other places up or down next door if someone didn't like it there.

If I wouldnt of feel down and injured my spine, hip hand and kneck 2 weeks ago in another country, I could of possibly helped out more. We stayed at the econo lodge this time, but next year I plan on staying with the gang, wherever they stay.  The meal was delicious, I bought 2 apps to share, I didnt know it was 17% added, but I didnt care. I also gave a 30 buck tip with my 37 buck meal. I wasnt sure if everyone was tipping and wanted to make sure the girls got a tip.

So on this post chalk up my vote as no complaints. As much as I run my mouth, I would of got your sides and drinks coming to ya.

Personally I like the hotel , the staff are awesome ! I never spend a lot of time in the room & just sleep there , the rooms are dated but I have no complaints at all , the extra lot atr the back is nice too with lots of room even when they are booked full for our cars & loading etc ,
Dodge City was fine I got good service & the food was good , maybe a bit pricey but again the lot is big enough for the cars to be safe which is key .
