i need ur advice guys. please
« on: April 22, 2005 - 12:22:00 AM »
ok heres the story. i am 17 and i have a 70 challenger 360 project. i built a 360 for the car. the car needs alot of work. staight body, but has overfenders. needs new brakes, alldrums, has small 8 1/4 rear end. needs interior work, alot of the parts dont work on it, the car just runs and runs fast. i love it to death but its getting expensive to drive and i dont have enough money to get the things i want and need for the car. i was thinking about trading for a dakota 5.9 rt truck. itll be new with power potential, i love trucks, lots of parts. would this be plain out stupid or what. i also want to know more about the late model rt 5.9 trucks. like do they have posi and what hp and specs and things like this. plese help guys. i would appreciate it. i have more pics if needed

Can you post more of these pics you have?

Can you tell us more about the car....is it a former slant six/318 car (judging from the hood) and the VIN? Do you have a picture of the data plate inside the engine compartment?

I understand your predicament...being 17 years old with an E-body in 2005 just doesn't mix. These cars are becoming the elite of muscle cars and as a result, have a big following and parts/repops are getting expensive. If you can afford to, do a light restoration and keep the car. Buy a Honda Civic for everyday driving if you must, because it will be even more difficult to find reasonably priced E-bodies when you have the cash and means. A 5.9 R/T Dakota, while nice, offering more 'convenience', will still suck your wallet in terms of gas and insurance money, while not retaining the collectability of the '70 Challenger.  ;)

Sorry to hear that you might sell you challenger, but being a teenager too, I also know that its very hard to restore a car and do anything else that requires $$$$ Im not going to spend time telling you why you shouldnt sell it, because Im sure someone else will jump in and tell you. Anyhow, good choice on the dakota R/T....if everything goes well for me this summer I should have a Dakota R/T by the fall. I have always wanted to own a dakota R/T, so I know a little bit about them. First off, the resale on them wasnt too good if you had bought it knew, but since your looking for a used one, this is a good thing, on eBay you can get one from 7,500-12,500 depending on the mods and mileage. The trucks are very modable and have lots of potential, but it will take lots of money to get it really fast. Out of the factory a Reg Cab can run in the 14s, so that gives you a good idea of what to expect. Stock they have 245/255 hp and a 3.92 posi if I remember correctly. With a couple of mods like a cam, rocker arms, intake, rocker arms, and exhaust the truck is good for 13s....after that you will have to look into these 3 ways to get into the 12s. First off, you can supercharge it, there are a couple of companies that offer superchargers for the R/T, but none of them are very cheap so this would probably be out of your budget. Second off, you can get a stroker kit, this too is an expensive mod so lets just toss that one out too. Third and the one I recommend to you is to use "NaaAAaAWWWWSSS", there are quite a few people using nitrous and are getting really good results, its cheap and effective. If you want to go 11s then there is always the mixing of these methods, such as a stroked, supercharged, nitroused R/T....but they probably way out of you budget. Anyhow, you might want to check out dodgedakotas.com, Dodgetruckworld, or just search google for more information. Good Luck

Do NOT sell the car.  Store her for a few years if you have to, but do not sell.  Buy a used Honda for a couple hundred bucks, and drive that.  Trust me, if you trade in the Challenger on a truck, you WILL regret it.  And, with the way prices are going, you may not be able to buy another one.  Just my .02 cents.

My dad had a 1999 Dakota R/T. It was a nice truck but the power was not very impressive IMO considering the 360 and 3.92 gears. I will say the handling was great for a truck though. If you can keep the Challenger to fix up when time and money allows.

360Madness, I'd suggest doing what I'm doing.  I drive a little Toyota as a daily driver and keep my '73 stored away at home.  I'm at college now, so my money flow is pretty much cut off for the time being, so I just take it little by little as I receive more money throughout the summer.  I too believe that if you traded your Challenger for a Dakota R/T, you would be kicking yourself in the future when one of them pops up for an unbelievable amount of money. (sort of like their appreciation just in the last two years)

If you are a fanatic like most of us, you will regret selling this car. DO NOT SELL THIS CAR.  Put it away and buy a beater for everyday transport.

I agree 360, If you sell it won't be long before you wish you had it back. Been there.  After I sold my first years ago, It wasn't long before I had to have another to replace it.  Since then I've had 14 Challengers and still have 2. You can always fix it later as you get time and money to do so.

Also, if you trade it in for a newer car, you can bet your ass that the dealer will rip you off in the trade.  For whatever he values your Challenger at, the day you trade it in, he's gonna stick it on the lot for double that price.  I've seen it happen before.

Not that I'm some old wise person with infinite wisdom, (maybe a wise ass if you ask Charger Fan) but I've been in your position once & learned the hard way. I had to have a '69 Charger when I was 19 years old, (I'm 42 now) & scraped up every cent I had to buy it. I even sold the car I was driving to add to the money I had, & dove right into it. It was a nice car that needed only "minor" work. It had a 383 Magnum, SE trim, factory mag wheels & it was ticket me red with a black roof.

I figured I could drive it & finish restoring it at the same time, & not drive some kind of econobox that wasn't cool. I was out of high school & in college, but only had a part time job. It was enough money to put gas into it & maintain it, but that was it. My friends sure didn't have cool cars like the VW beetle with faded white paint, or the Maroon Vega wagon that couldn't pass a bicycle, or the 3 shades of green, 318 4 door Coronet with ripped seats.

Tires? Nope, the ones I had were still holding air so I didn't care if there was tread on them.

Brakes? Nope, I could still pump them & if I didn't tail gate I'd have enough room to stop.

Loose steering? Nope, it wasn't that loose & I could still make turns.

I ran the heck out of it, had a lot of fun & it broke. A lot. I mean a real lot! I bought it in the early 1980's for $1600, but sunk $3000 into it for all kinds of repairs during the couple of years I had it on the road like transmission, brakes, tires, front end, etc. & never had the money to restore it the way I wanted to. When the timing chain finally went, it took the rest of the motor with it & there was no way I was going to spend whatever it took to get it rebuilt & still need rust repairs & paint on top of that.

I sold it for a huge loss as a project, or maybe even a parts car to someone for $600 & moved on. I bought a cheap, $100 4 door Coronet with a slant 6 that got me around & never left me stranded. All my friends still had their "uncool" cars, but they managed to save up some serious money for down payments on new cars while I was still driving $100 clunkers for a while. My point is, is that you can't really do the Challenger the way you'd want to & drive it as a daily driver.

If you can afford to save it & be able to store it someplace dry & safe, do it. If not, then maybe sell it & wait until later on to find another one. True, they will likely be more money later, but hopefully you will have moved up the food chain some & be making more money too. Look for a dependable car that wasn't abused by someone else, & save your money to fix the Challenger the way you want when time permits.

I had a cool Charger while my friends drove their embarrassing things, but their cars were on the road more than mine & it wasn't as cool having a red & black driveway ornament.
