driveshaft issues
« on: July 18, 2014 - 10:04:46 AM »
vibration at 60+ mph.  was talking to chryco about this problem. looks like my driveshaft it too short, slip yoke not in far enough. so i need a 2 inch longer driveshaft. question is is there supposed to be a dust boot of some type on back of trans?  or just the seal at the end of transmission like the pic shows?  And it DOES look like its not in enough right?  Does anyone know how long the drive shaft on a 73 challenger 340/727 trans should be? and measured from where to where?

You can get  the rear seal with or without the dust boot.

Thread with similar problem http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=99456.0
I am sure if you search there is lengths listed on this site from before , no measurement handy right now though .
The factory seal has a dust boot , most aftermarket do not either works , factory is preferable in dirty environments

Took it by a local, drive line specialty shop, today and got it measured up.  Went home and pulled it out and will drop off tomorrow.  Think it needs to be lengthened by about 1 3/4 inches and true it up with new u joints and we will give it a try..   Will know by mid next week I hope.

You may still need to change the bushing back there too

New bushing, balanced drive shaft, new u joints.  The length of the shaft measured up so we left that part alone.  Got,it up to 70mph on the local parkway and no vibration at all.   :2thumbs:

Sorry to use this thread but I figured it would make for an easier and quicker answer. I've also had a fast vibration anywhere from low speed and increasing with higher speeds from day one. Searched many time and found nothing until I read this thread and there it was. I had this drive line made for my car and it does feel like it could be coming from this very spot. Would this amount sticking out cause that type of vibration? Thanks guys!
