Has anyone used 3M panel bonding adhesive ?
« on: July 27, 2014 - 03:07:37 PM »
Buddy of mine came by the other day, long time paint and body man. He told me in his shop they are using this product on quarter panels, floor pans, door skins, etc. Basically any non structural panel. No welding, and he says once it drys its not coming apart. Said its expensive but makes up for it in time saving.   :clueless: Any input ?

I'd like more info too, have heard this stuff is actually stronger than a weld and no warping to worry about.

Bart is right; the roof and 1/4's are structural on these things. Having said that, it's used, in that capacity, everyday in repair shops. I am in and out of these shops on nearly a daily basis and haven't heard any horror stories yet. We used it in the cowl/firewall assembly of my own Challenger and I'm using it as a seam sealer as well. Give it the proper prep and time to cure and it's harder than Chinese arithmetic.

I used it on my quarter panel but only at the wheel lip to avoid welding there.  Just make sure you have everything lined up as you don't get a second chance once the glue cries, and lots of clamps.

We used to use it at a sign shop I worked at. We did destructive testing on it and found it held as well as welding on .125 thick aluminum.

I've been told that the metal will give way before the adhesive bond releases. Haven't tested that yet, though

I'd feel safe using it. I just like to weld.

Sorry if I'm not getting this, but is the panel butt welded also? Or is the adhesive all that's needed, then body work is performed right over the panels to blend the seam?
