Location of proportioning valve
« on: July 27, 2014 - 06:38:45 PM »
Would anyone have a picture showing the correct location of the proportioning valve on a 70 challenger?

Thanks in advance.

The porprotioning valve has a stud and a tab which fits into two hole on the lower section of the inner appron....pretty sure it only fits in one area... :dunno:

This is a 71 set-up

Just so you are clear 70 front disc use the picture above with two separate units , drum brakes in 70 only have the upper larger unit .

Another stupid question I know but........ When I apply my brakes I have brake fluid leaking out of my value. All connections seem tight. Can I assume it is an O-Ring issue?   :-[

Could be a flaring issue.

I do not believe that there are any O-rings on the brake lines.

They seal by the flare at the end of the tube.  Sometimes that flare could be bad, or the mating surface in the dist. block could be bad, which would cause a leak.  Sometimes it is helpful to tighten and loosen the nut a few times.

Are you using stock lines or stainless lines?

There are O-rings inside the valve.  I seem to remember reading that some of the reproduction valves have had leaking issues.  Wipe everything dry and have someone push on the pedal while you look to see where the leak is.  I hope you are using DOT5 fluid so you don't have to worry about the paint.

Fluid is coming from the end of the valve that points towards the ground. Sorry not sure what it is called. It has no plumbing at the end. (Metering valve????).

Too late with the fluid. Already ruined a lot of my paint.   :swear:

Did you buy the valve or did it come with the car?  I'd try sending it back.  Some people have gotten two or three valves before they find one that hasn't leaked.  That's where the other ones have been leaking from. Another option is to take the valve off, and remove that fitting.  Try to see if it's an O-ring issue or if a part was machined too small.

Now is the time to replace the fluid with DOT5.  You need to get all of the old stuff out of the system first.

Came with the car. Looks brand new. I will take the valve off and check the rings. Also will switch to the DOT5. I am assuming its not as corrosive as the DOT3?

DOT5 is silicone fluid.  It will not hurt the paint.

Some of the reproduction valves also had an issue with locking up the brakes.  Some of them had the wrong piston installed.  Once the brakes are applied, they won't release. If you are going to take yours apart, look at the pistons and compare them to this thread.

Another thread to look at.  Check to make sure the fittings are tight.
