'72 Challenger Progress
« on: July 28, 2014 - 09:45:06 AM »
I got some time this weekend and worked on the rear side marker lights. I am frenching in a set of '71 Roadrunner lights. I have always hated the DOT afterthought looking ones that came with the car. Upon sanding back the paint I found the car had a patch panel stitched in and I took off the excessive filler and leaded it in.

I like that a lot.  Much nicer then just getting rid of them all together.  Good job.

Running out of money as work is real slow. But I can buy sand and work on the car. I was going to get the car soda blasted but due to the budget I am left to making it work with what I have. I am blasting the bottom, interior floor, trunk, inner wells, jambs and engine compartment leaving me to either chemically strip and sand or just sand the exterior of the car. This is 900pounds later with a cheap catalog sand blaster.

I rented a big sand blaster from an equipment rental store and used our industrial air compressor at work, and did it myself also. Hotter than blazes that day and it wasn't fun wearing the protective gear. It was kind of fun though. Nothing like peeling off rust and crud with a sand blaster.    :2thumbs:

Dirty work for sure.

Remember to add a tube and threaded rod for e brake thru the frame connectors.

Thanks for the heads up. I have already channeled the e brakes through the frame connectors. Still considering the electric e brake.

I tried to time this so that I would be doing this in the cooler days of fall. The temperatures have risen into the 70's. You are not kidding it gets hot. My time is longer because of the size of the sand blaster. I have plenty of air with a 200 gallon 10 hp compressor.

Finally got some paint on the bottom, inside and trunk. I used POR15 and coated the window channels as well. I will use the POR15 primer so I can paint over the POR15 where I will be putting finish paint as well. It is then onto striping the rest of the paint on the body.

I have a dilemma with some pitting I discovered on the roof. I started stripping it and sanded to metal and found that filler had infiltrated the pits to where I can't get it out without fear of sanding the metal too thin. The car from the fender tag had a white vinyl roof on it and I guess it percolated some rust under there. Is there a chemical to remove the rust other than a POR 15 remedy? Any thoughts? I am worried if by leaving it may come back to bite me as bubbling later. The clowns that prepped and painted this car before I got it left a lot of rust around the windows that were already bubbling. There is no telltale signs of it on the roof and that has had finish paint on it for at least four years.
