Which carburetor for BB??
« on: July 31, 2014 - 11:55:54 AM »
So looking to upgrade the carburetor on my cuda.  When I stand on it the car seems to sort of fall on it's face somewhat.  It currently has an older Holley 3110 I believe with vacuum secondaries and no choke.  It's mainly a drag car as of now.  What do y'all recommend for this setup?

Engine:  477 cu in stroker (440), Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, Xtreme Comp cam (3000-7000 RPM), Edelbrock mid-rise intake, big headers, 2.5" exhaust, no cats. Shift point ~5700 rpm
Trans: Mopar 727 reverse manual valve body (DR1 package from 727specialist), TCS Products 9" 3000 rpm stall torque converter
3.55 rear end.

Carbs I am considering, but limited to, are Edelbrock Thunder Series AVS 800 cfm, Quick Fuel Q-series 850, 950 or 1050 cfm, Holley Comp. Series 830/850 cfm or Holley Aluminum Ultra HP 850 or 950 cfm

 :feedback:     thanks

My choice with your combo would be the Holley Ultra HP 950.   :2cents:

I agree , I would add Proform to that list , Proform is probably the best bang for the $$ , QF OR Holley are good too .
The 3110 is too small , but should not stumble , tweaking the float levels , accelerator pump & secondary spring should eliminate any stumble

Thanks, I was actually just looking at Proform carbs too but I don't know much about them.

A Proform mechanical secondary carb was one of the best decisions I made in owing my car. Very little tuning to get it right. That thing was so responsive!

So if you are into drag racing, a mechanical secondary carb is more your choice.  Given the size of your engine, I would think 950CFM.

just checked their website. base plates and metering blocks are USA made, doesn't sound like anything else is. but then again, not sure about Holley or QF either. what about Demon.....

Same carb as QF for all practical purposes. They use the same cell term sections

that's good to hear. i do know of a couple people that used their roller rockers on BB engines and the adjusters ripped the threads right out of the aluminum.

Is the Ultra HP worth it over a 4150 HP Holley? :dunno:

Yes , the 4150 doesn't have removable bleeds generally , the Ultra should be far more adjustable

I have this carb on mine and love it. Best carb I've ever owned hands down! Every orifice that flows air or fuel is tuneable I REALLY recommend a air/fuel ratio gauge to tune with , best $200 I've ever spent. :2thumbs:

What other carbs have you owned?  Just trying to get a feel for how it stacks up.

What brand AF ratio gauge did you use?  Do you use it only at idle or were you able to utilize it under load, like on a dyno?
