As I slowly gather parts for my 440 rebuild, I started reading up on distributors. I have a 20 year old Mopar Performance dizzy. It seems to work as far as I can tell. The write ups and opinions on the more expensive units ie MSD - $275, say the reluctor/gap is more accurate throughout the rpm range, never have to reset the gap etc. Then there's Firecore - $175 -  that is less $ but make the same claims.
So....
Are aftermarket distributors good value for the money? Are they a worthwhile step up in performance and reliability?

IMO no , MSD is multi spark up to 3000 rpm where the engine starts to really make power , the advance is adjustable but so are the new Mopar dists
I have not seen the firecore ones .

I have a firecore and it's rock solid as far as timing goes.it is built like the mopar dist where you have to tear it apart the make your adjustments and need the degree keys to adjust the mech. advance.

Does it appear to be built better, or just look better on the outside? (Machined look rather than cast)

it's built better just basically the same as the mopar design.
