Challenger wiper system issues
« on: August 05, 2014 - 05:34:26 PM »
:aussie:Hi all, hope someone can help me out as l am at a stand still.
I have a 1971 Dodge Challenger with a 3 speed wiper switch and motor.
The wipers don't go into the park position and just stop when ever the switch is turn off/park and also seem to only have one speed even when selecting low, med & high position.
The switch at times has a electrical shorting sound and when disconnected goes away so l have replaced the switch but it made no difference.
When the switch is in the park position the wipers stop not going to park and when you help them move a little by hand they seem to want to move but still won't go to the park position. Seems there is not enough power to move them.
I have tested the motor by using jumper leads and the motor seems to work ok including going to the park position and a higher speed.
Any help would be great. Cheers

Contact Kim @ Passion 4 Mopars .
The wipers often got hung up on the chrome strip at the base of the windshield & burn out the park feature as it cannot turn off

I had some issues similar to you. The chrome strip was sticking up some so I pumped some silicone into the gap and placed a roll of paper towels between it and the hood over night to hold it down while it dried. Another issue was the arm hitting the strip preventing it from going down enough. Here's what I did to fix that.

This might be helpful or at least provide some insight to wiper circuit operation. Factory training slide show from 1970, a little cheesy but good info no the less.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58yLxpYKD4E&noredirect=1

Thanks for the responses but still no luck.
The wiper arms are not actually hitting the chrome strip at the bottom of the window as the motor has not gone into the park function.
The motor tests ok by using jumper leads at the motor plug with it disconnected from the bulkhead.
The motor runs in park, low and high but no mid speed. But when the motor is plugged back into the bulkhead and the switch is plugged in the motor does not work correctly.
Only low speed works in all three speed positions and when switched to park the wipers just stop but seem to have some power going to them but not enough to move without some help by hand. Also when pushed by hand the wipers with just move back and forth and don't go into park.
Any other ideas?

Thanks Chryco Psycho. Just looked again at Passion 4 Mopars web site.
Silly me.
As l have the dash leaned back to access the switches with the steering column removed and the wiper with is not earthed through the switch body.
I just run an earth jumper wire from the switch to the body and all works ok now.
Thanks all for your help.
