Back around 1992 I did body work & painted my red Challenger Convertible, I was literally putting final touches on it five minutes before hitting the road for Hot August Nights in Reno..... Get to Reno, hit the A&W hadn't been there 15 minutes & so jackass is leaning on my car... I confront him & he comes off with "Hey it's just a car man, no big deal" As he gets off the fender, there's a 3" long scratch...  Now I'm really pissed, & we are getting quite a few peoples attention, he's getting threatened by people I've never met... He was escorted off the property by security to keep many in attendance from kicking his ass... Most of the people appreciate how much work, love & money we put into our cars but there's always those who have no clue & are only there for "The Party"...

1997 I stupidly took my Sublime Challenger Vert to Hot August Nights thinking I wouldn't run into any more idiots.... I quickly learned the value of a primered Hooptie, there was a guy parked next to me with a 49 Merc done in black primer... He didn't care that people with strollers & cameras were bouncing their crap off his car.. I on the other hand...

I stuck around for about 2 hours in the evening then I had to leave before my girl friend or I went to jail... That time I got no damage but allot of stress.... I'll never take a car to a show like that again... Hot August Nights is more of a Street Party with cars as distractions rather than a car show...

Not that things can't happen at the car show but hopefully you get more of a car people type of crowd rather than a drunk idiot who had one just like it when he was younger.... That is a 73 Nova right???....

OH YEA! i feel your pain.

most people apologize and walk humbly away. if someone said that to me i'd probably buff out the scratch with their face.

I'm starting to worry that I may never take the car out of the garage once it's finished.   :pullinghair:

I've been to lots of shows and never had a problem. Don't let it scare you. The number of such incidents compared to the number of cars is extremely low. The odds are highly in your favour. Take your car out and enjoy it.

Pretty much agree, however my personal preference these days is getting a group together & having a rolling car show... Drives to the mountains, drives to the coast, drives to car events...

I don't think the car show promoters appreciate it when we roll up with 10-15 nice cars, park across the street, check out the show then continue on our drive...

Like many, I've taken my cars to may shows and normally don't have any issues.   I do put small signs "Look but please don't touch" which I think help.

I was at a large Mopar show in Florida once, however, when I left to check out a few cars and came back to find a young man (in his 20's) actually sitting in the driver's seat EATING a damn hotdog!     I (fairly calmly) went up and said "What are you doing?   Please get out of my car!

He just shrugged his shoulders and walked off.    I was absolutely dumbfounded.

My #1 jaw dropper so far was a guy wearing jeans actually sitting with both feet off the ground, on my fender, to have his GF take pics   :dunno:

It sucks but if its any consolation, my last BIG scratch I did myself. A little to careless with a clipboard coming out of a show....  :banghead:

Thank you.  Feel better now ... at least a little better.  A few friends at the show and a lot of beer would probably make it even better.   :drunk:

I go to tons of shows with my car and have never had a problem. I have seen a kid lean on my car to take a picture he was like 6 or 7 so I can deal with a handprint if it means he is going to get into the car hobby.

Here's another "you're not alone" story. It was 1996, car just came home in the morning with fresh paint and ready to be assembled. My younger son (3 at the time) needed to take his tricycle out of the garage. Well, the handle bar's tassel metal ring left 2 4 inch scratches down to the primer. They're still there but healing.
