Had a mechanic pull the steering box out after pulling the engine. I go by to pick up the box and see the column still place. Asked how he got the box out he says he just took the pin out and pushed the colum back. Did this collapase the column?

The shaft is made to collapse.
Did he unbolt the column itself and shove the whole thing back or is it still bolted to the firewall/dash and he just collapse the shaft?

No he didn't unbolt it from the firewall. Just pushed the shaft back into the column.
