Alternator amp size
« on: August 16, 2014 - 10:59:40 AM »
After putting EFI on my 73 Challenger I have found that the volt gauge is always charging 14.4-14.6 volts and seem to never settle down any lower. Can I put a higher output alternator on or what is the highest output my stock wiring will handle? I have already had a voltage regulator go bad at the Nats and it stopped charging again yesterday. I'm not sure if the alternator has went bad but will check it out today.

This is the one we spoke about. 78 Amp dual pulley at AutoZone. PN DL7533 I have 3 of them.
Application is for a Dodge 91 D250 3/4 ton 2wd 5.9 Cummins

I would recommend a jumper from the alt output across to the bat terminal on the start relay if you go above 55 amps

I run 100 amp Tuff Stuff alternators on my Challenger and Duster. Haven't had any issues with either car even running through the stock bulkhead connector, although I'm about to do a voltmeter conversion on my Duster because it runs a dual electric fan set up.

If your alternator is able to supply that much voltage, then it has plenty of amperage.  If it was low on the amperage, the voltage would be lower.

I suspect that there is a voltage loss somewhere in the circuit and the regulator is working hard to make up for it so it is telling the alternator to work harder.

If the feed is still going thru the bulkhead connector, I suspect that may be where the problem lies

You need to use relays to jump power from the start relay to the fans without going through the firewall & ammeter
 14,5 v is normal BTW

Is this a direct bolt in for a 70 SB, any fitment or wiring mods needed on the alternator itself?  Pulleys match up for AC?
I've already done the ampmeter bypass and have the headlights on relays.

Oh I do. It has a battery relocation with a cut-out and a 250 amp continuous duty relay up front that runs the 70 amp relays for the fans.
