Hard time shifting into 2nd
« on: August 22, 2014 - 01:33:11 AM »
Not sure what the problem is, but i can't ever hit 2nd. I do know that the levers were aligned properly, And it shifts into 2nd when it is just sitting, but when i am cruising and then shift to 2nd, all i get is grinding gears. Do i need to adjust the clutch a bit more or what?    :clueless:

On my first test drive after assembly of new motor/trans. I had the same problem.
I adjusted my linkage to throw more into 2nd gear (longer travel). Before that it was like there was just enough travel to touch the gear making a grinding noise. So that adjustment I guess helped it go further to lock in to gear. Might be worth a try.
For me I didn't think it was the clutch because 1st, 3rd & 4th was fine. That and I had good pedal travel before the clutch would kick in.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

My transmission is a fresh rebuild also. Simple enough transmissions, and it shifts into all the gears just fine when sitting. I will try and adjust the lever a bit more like you suggested.

I pulled my tranny 4 times because of the same issue.Took the tranny back to the guy who rebuilt it twice.Took it to a different person and found out the whole tranny was garbage. The first guy was a backyard mopar guy who sold me the tranny for 500 bucks. i ended up buying a  new rebuilt tranny from a transmission guy in Oregon. Put that one in and it worked perfect.Imo if the linkage is adjusted right  then the problem is internal.

Mine was freshly rebuilt as well.
Shifted in all gears just fine when sitting as well.
Adjusted linkage and for me, cured the problem.
Hopefully that's all it is for you too.  :2thumbs:

I hope it is just linkage. I rebuilt it myself using all new parts from Passon, including all new synchro rings. I took so many pictures as i dissembled it and also used the internet article from Mopar Muscle to re-assemble. Right now i can't image anything being put together wrong.
I guess i will tackle it sometime next week after i finish a few other little projects.

if it pops out of gear it could be the syncro sliders or worn teeth on the gears adjustment wil often fix some problems when the gears do not mesh fully , if the lever on the trans are too long it will limit throw distance

I hope it is just adjustment. Is it possible to put a syncro ring in backwards on these transmissions?

It is possible, but i replaced the shift fork studs because the threaded ends were worn and stripped. It shifts fine when sitting. I can shift it into 2nd if it is not moving, but if the car is actually moving then it just grinds the gears if i force it into 2nd.

I hope it is just adjustment.

So have you tried making adjustments yet?

Transmission is going to have to come out. I tried everything, adjusting the rods, adjusting the clutch, nothing seemed to make much difference. Now its hung up in 2nd and i don't dare try and force it out.   Oh well, like i didn't have anything better to do. It will have to wait a bit, while i change out the power steering pump in my pickup and do a brake job on my wives car. Plenty of projects that is for sure.

Transmission came out ok. Pulled off the inspection cover and right away discovered what was wrong. The end of one of the interlock levers was broke off.    :bang head:
I am sure i probably broke this when i first put this transmission back together and was getting the rods adjusted. I will have to be super careful the next time around, as i am getting really tired of pulling this transmission out.   :eek4:
