6AN to 5/16" tube
« on: August 25, 2014 - 12:18:48 PM »
I was hoping there was such a thing as a union that had 6AN male on one end and 5/16" male flare on the other end.  I haven't been able to find anything like that.  I need to connect 5/16" trans cooler lines to 6AN braided hose.  Is this my only option?

I don't like the idea of a compression fitting.  My trans lines are SS.  I don't even see a 5AN tube nut/sleeve available.  At least that would let me flare the end of the tube and connect to a standard 6AN male to 6AN male union.

Here is a 6AN to 5AN reducer.  Would this work?  Would the nut on the end of the trans line screw onto the 5AN side or are the threads different?  I think the flare angle is different.  Can the SS line be cut to length, then re-flared to the proper AN angle and the original nut used to attach to this adapter?

I get all my fittings and hose from here...
https://www.frozenboost.com/stainless-steel-teflon-fuel-lines/?osCsid=31c1d0a093d346ca3b027a5492e30433
and swagelock fittings to connect to SS tubing. http://www.swagelok.com/downloads/WebCatalogs/EN/MS-01-140.pdf
They are not cheap though.... looks like a part # -500-6-5AN might work for you?

What I'm seeing looks like inverted flares.  The -600-6-5 reduction union is what I'd need but it would have to have a regular flare.(convex)  The angles would have to be 37 on the AN side and 45 on the other.  Maybe I'm not looking at the PDF correctly.  :dunno:

They'll have anything you want and will custom make stuff also. Majority of all race teams located in Indy use them. Their tech is very knowledgeable. Tell them what you need and they'll have something.

I did find 5AN tube nuts/sleeves on the Jeg's website.  I'd just have to get the SS line re-flared to 37 degrees and then use that adapter fitting I posted earlier.  I'd like to stay away from compression fittings.  I don't want a cooler line blowing off.

I don't have a problem using compression fittings because the pressure is very low in the line and the steel compression fitting fuel line kits have never leaked on my cars at 70 psi...but, all the compression fittings seem to be for aluminum line so I am not sure they will fit correctly on a steel line or bite hard enough if they are not steel ferules.

I am trying to do the same for a new cooler and new transmission cooler lines

There is an adapter that uses a compression fitting on one end and a male 6AN on the other end.  How much pressure runs through the cooler lines?  While looking for fittings, I was on E-bay and there is a company that says they make their own.  They said that style of adapter can be used with stainless line. :dunno:

"Rob C" no, I need to connect 5/16 stainless tube to a 6AN braided line.  That fitting would let me connect the two, but I'd have to use a piece of rubber hose in between.

I believe it is less that 20 psi  (just found something in my book that says 5-30 psi)

Is that fitting made for steel tubing?  The first one you mentioned, that is.   What did you find on Ebay link wise...I was trying to avoid rubber hose connections even tho I have never had a problem with one

You aren't harping.  We're just having a conversation about the best way to solve a problem.  I'm sure Earls sells the same fitting.
