Tremec 5 spd or Gear Vendors OD
« on: August 29, 2014 - 03:56:04 PM »
I am looking for help/advice on changing my 727 3 speed to a better performing transmission with more gears for cruising at higher speeds and lower RPM. I also think I could get more HP/TQ with this modification too.  My '71 Chally has a 408 stroker (465HP, 495 TQ) and is mostly street driven, cruise nights and to shows, and generally messing around with an occasional street light challenge for fun with no track time.

I have narrowed my options to a Gear Vendors OD for around $3000 when it is all said and done with a little modification to the tunnel and for wiring or a Tremec TKO-600 that is double the cost and requires much more fabrication and modification.   I searched for information on Gear Vendors here but most posts are over 5-6 yrs old.  I am willing to pay more if the Tremec is that much better but would like to do this only once.

Does anyone have experience with GV?  Would you go with the GV or Tremec?  Is there another option that I am missing?

I wanna replace my 727 also, looked at GV, but a 518 auto w. OD seems better for me, there is a lot of good info here on the forums about that swap. Have not decided yet though.

Manual I would Get the Passon 5 spd . No Tremec ever
Auto the 518 would be my first choice , or the Gm 46le Brad is running .
The GV is a great unit I would have no hesitation running one , bolts on to the rear of either the 833 or 727 this will give you 6 speed with the 727 or 8 with the 833 , I have run these , the quality is great , they are very strong & work well .

I went with a built turbo400 with gear vendors.  My stroked 392 w/ supercharger but out almost 660hp and I wanted to over build the trans so I would never have to worry. Total for trans and gv with most options around $7k

I have a Tremec in my cuda and love it. Nice and smooth and cruises 70 mph like a dream. I never plan on beating on it so I couldn't tell you how it shifts at 7k. I talked to a few people about the GV set up and I'm thinking if I ever build another car I would go with that set -up. What someone mentioned to me was if you ever sold your car it can easily be swapped out with the original parts and put it into the next project which I thought was a great idea.

I would like to add the GV to my A833 for lower RPM Highway cruising. Planning ahead (or wishful thinking) I used TTI's GV "H" pipe option dual exhaust. TTI says their X pipe and standard H pipe system will not fit with the GV but their GV H pipe is further back and designed to allow for the length of the GV unit to fit.

A GV is on my "someday" list. My buddy had one and was very happy with it.

That's funny cause I talked to GV today and he said the 3 spd OD should have no problem with the TTI H-pipe.  In fact he said TTI asked GV to send them and OD unit so they can make sure it fit.  When I ordered my TTI set up, I didn't know there was a GV option.   :banghead:

Does anyone who is running GV have a TTI H or X pipe standard setup?

Isn't there a running list of guys waiting for AP kits?  And I think I have read a good number of kits are delivered with the wrong parts?

Gear Vendor's 7272 or  TKO-600...two totally different approaches.

I'd say nail down whether you want to stick with the automatic or go manual first.

Look for the GVOD part number for your application on TTI web site.
