71 Challenger for sale what do you think its worth?
« on: September 01, 2014 - 11:35:05 PM »
Hi all theres a 71 Challenger R/T for sale here. It has a matching number drivetrain. Its complete with a 383, EV2 , black interior, 4 speed car. Runs and drives but needs total restoration and drivetrain rebuild has rust in both quarters and trunk floor is thin with alot of pinholes owner has both AMD quarters, front valance, 2 piece trunk floor. No rot on frames or inner fenders. Might be some under gas pedal and a few bubbles under vynal top, grill is there but cracked in several places and a few chunks missing. I dont have many pictures but wondering what a offer price could be. Thanks

Don't know what it's worth, but that's the first car I've seen an H5XX interior in. Absolutely screams 70's!

I currently own a '71 Challenger and this looks like a decent project start.  It's funny that the '71 is one of the rarest Challengers to find but yet is not high on the valve chart with '70 being the most valuable (not including R/T or T/A's).  I would offer no more than $12k since it is a running and driving car.  That grill is going to be expensive to replace, I'm not sure anyone repops it.  BTW, it will probably take at least $35k to bring it back depending on if you want to keep it stock, restomod, or a nice driver.

Nice project but I agree that it will be at least $35000 to restore . I have the 73 for sale in the last post and I think I'm up to almost $40K on it , and it didnt need any panels replaced .i think it may be a good "donor car" lol

I've seen project cars in this condition sell for around 8-10k
This is a running RT 4sp car, albeit the drive train needs a rebuild.
Hate to see it taken up for parts.  These cars are getting harder to find, and I've seen worse get rebuilt.
The frame is solid and it is matching numbers
My opinion, if you can get under 10,000 buy it.  I would!
If you have some skills, you can decrease labor costs by doing some of the work yourself, or do it a little at a time.
Rebuild costs almost always exceed the value.  This is after all a hobby!
If you like the car, go for it.

I agree $5K - $7K would be a steal....anything under $10K would be a good deal.

I thought it might be in the 12k 14k area because it's all there and not hacked up but needing a fair amount of sheet metal work.  Is the comparable 70 challenger cost more in this condition?  It looks like the 71 is more rare like 450 made with 383 4 spd. I became aware of the cost of restoring these years after my 71 cuda like everthing in the rally dash between dash pad, gauges, stereo, face panels, harness, etc it got real expensive. I got a feeling he not going to take 10k area but we'll see. It is a cool car!

I would think around 10K for a running 1971 R/T Challenger with fender tag would be about right.

More or less depending on actual condition...

There are some unique parts on the 71 R/T Challengers that can be rather $$$$$ like the grill.

It appears the door panels have the correct carpet on the bottom like the 1970 SE optioned Challengers but it looks like speaker holes have been cut....

At the Mopar Nationals you will see 20 1970 R/T Challengers for every 1 original 1971 R/T Challenger.

The plaid seats probably matched the plaid pants the salesman was wearing when the car sold new in 71. :cooldancing:

The cloth insert seats are one of my most favorite things about my 71 R/T Challenger.

The cloth seats are unique.  I kind of like the way they look.

Thanks guys.

They are both original R/T's.

One is my wife's, original green 340 automatic car now running a 440 Six Pack.

The other one with the cloth seats is a original 383 Plum Crazy 4 speed car with another 440 Six Pack engine.

They are fun but I'm getting a little tired of a sea of purple in the garage.  :eek7:

Wouldn't mind an E or B body convertible.

Like the others mentioned I'm curious to see the asking price on the OP's Challenger.

We'll I got the price it's 20k. He might work down a little. He didn't think the going value was accurate. Oh well I have plenty of other projects. A friend told me though he's going to try a package deal for the 71 and a few other cars he has for one of my friends done cars.
