pitman arm removal on 71 cuda
« on: September 05, 2014 - 09:44:04 PM »
Maybe a stupid question...... but I'm putting power steering back in a 71 cuda and need to remove the old manual gearbox from the car. Do I have to remove the pitman arm before a remove the manual steering gear or will the whole assembly come out without removing it. I've never done this before. If I have to remove the arm before removing the steering box, how the hell do you do it without removing the steering center linkage and tie rods? Help..................!

Are you wanting to change the pitman arm when you change the box ? If so, you'll have to remove the pitman arm from the center link, but not the box. If you want to retain the pitman arm that's in the car, then you'll have to at least remove it for the manual box. :2cents:

Thanks, so your saying the whole assembly, manual steering box and pitman arm, can be removed as one piece up through the engine compartment and into the trash?

Or down through the bottom. Once you un-hook the center link/pitman arm, you'll be able to move the center link out of the way.

Thanks for your wisdom anlauto! I'll let you know how it goes.

If you have headers, I would think you are better going down to get the box out.

With manifolds I am not sure.

I am sure you will have to back in from below with the power box.  It is much bigger then the manual box.

But, please don't throw it in the trash.  I am sure you can use it as a core or sell it for same.
