That is the stereo crossover box. It's used with multi-speaker (3 or 5) factory stereos. It mounts on the left side of the cardboard glove box.
I know this because I have one in my car.

I should have mentioned that you DON'T add any extra screws. You just use one screw already present on the glove box.

Only used on cars with FM radios.  AM radios didn't use it...even if they had a rear speaker.

What about AM cars with a three speaker dash ?

I don't think the AM radio was available with a three speaker dash.  Your only options for AM radio was single front speaker or single front/single rear.

Maybe the earlier years are different.  Did yours use that crossover box?

Alan, I suspect your car had five speakers was because of the cassette deck even though it only had AM radio.

Yes I believe the cassette deck gave you the crossover box with a three speaker dash :2cents:

Cassette but no FM ?  Someone in the bean counting department must have figured that if someone didn't want to spend the big bucks for an AM/FM/Cassette they might go the 1/2 step and get that I guess.

I ask the original owner why he ordered it that way...His answer was simple.....There was no FM stations in Newfoundland at the time.
