Trouble starting, again
« on: September 14, 2014 - 05:19:03 PM »
So I tried to start my chally today, been a whiiiiiiiile, cranks just fine.  If I pour some gas in the carb it will fire for a second or two then die.  Now, when it's cranking, my fuel pressure guage at the carb is bouncing around 6psi or so.  So it's claiming to be getting fuel, but it only starts when I dump fuel into the carb.  Thoughts?

is the pump electric or mechanical ?
the carb may be evaporating dry after running with the alcohol in the fuel etc & the heat of the engine so the carb may be dry , if it is electric the carb should fill quickly , if it is mechanical it will take 30 second of cranking to fill it back up .

Ok, I can see the bowls have fuel, but still won't start, still fires for a second if I put gas straight into the carb.  Otherwise just keeps cranking on the verge of starting, keeps starting like it's going to fire but never does, just keeps stumbling.

It still sounds like it isn't getting fuel or it doesn't like the gas in the tank.  How old is the gas in the tank?  Since it starts when you pour fuel in the carb, doesn't seem to be a spark problem.   :clueless:

It was basically empty, I put a couple gallons of fresh 93 in the tank and used a bottle to fill the bowls with the same

Hey chryco, it's has an electric choke but it doesn't seem to be working.  When I hold the choke manually I get that continuous stumbling on the verge of running.  All the plugs are less than a year old and the car was running when we moved back in May.

How do you initially try to start the car? With the key off and the choke open I would give the throttle 2 full pumps to the floor then hit the starter. If there is fuel there it will start and you will have to feather the throttle a couple of times to keep it running. Been doing it like that for years on my mopars with no choke,

Ok, so I pulled the good off, took off the air cleaner, filled the bowls with fuel, and worked the throttle with my hand.  When I slam it to wide open, there is a just a drizzle of fuel, I was under the impression it should be a strong stream of fuel when I do that?  Does that mean accelerator pump?
