Yep accelerator pump. Yours probably has a rip in the diaphragm and is not giving a full squirt.

Fairly easy to change out and they come in most rebuild kits or you can buy them by themselves at most speed shops.

Take the carb off the intake, flip it over and remove the 4 screws holding the accelerator pump housing on. Replace and you are good to go!

Tyr to stay away from fuel with alcohol in it , it will eat the rubber parts

:iagree:  Shell's top grade 93 octane has no alky in it. FYI.  See how the car runs if the accelerator pump fix gets it going, because if it's rich, the alky may have chewed the power valve as well. If you've filled the float bowls with fresh gas and then given it a drink down the carb, it should run. If it doesn't, I'd pull the carb apart, wash/blow it out and stick a rebuild kit in it as you may have further problems. You could also pull the fuel line off the carb and using a hose, run it into a container and see if the pump is actually pumping. Pull the rotor before you do, since you don't want spark around open gas. Good luck

I've never had an accellerator pump diaphragm break or tear. If it did it would leak fuel out the bottom of the carb and you would smell or see it. Probably needs a good rebuild and pay attention to the pump circuit that includes the diaphragm, check ball or valve and the anti pullover valve at the squirter.

I went ahead and did a full rebuild, but I have 1 question, does the electric choke assembly go together a certain way? What I mean is, doesn't the tab/slider have to be inserted into the circle on the end of the spring?

yes , & then it can be dialed to change how fully it closes & how fast it comes off , I usually set it so it will barely fully close on a cold day so it is not on for long & comes off fast

Ok carb is rebuilt and back on the car, fired up after a couple cranks.  Now if I give it a little gas "not flooring it or anything, just a little throttle poke) revs hop up, then in the way back down I get a loud ping, like banging a piece of rebar agains a metal pole.  And this happenss every one in a while at idle too, but not regular enough for me to get a sound clip lol

I believe I know whats happening.

The pic that cryco posted with the choke. You have to put the tab on the end of the spring (looks like a loop).

You are hearing your choke engage and the go off making that twang/ping noise.

I got it in the loop HP, the Ping sound is definitely heard through the exhaust, so I think it's internal

No I don't think so, maybe I need to upload a sound clip.  My buddy said he thought it sounds like a lean misfire?  But he lives 1500 miles away so he's just guessin too

Are you running the factory exhaust manifolds? If you are, that "tink" you hear may be the heat riser valve in the rt manifold. You could always tell a 340 back in the day because of it's distinctive sound made by that valve. Just a shot in the dark.

Nope, running headers, maybe it's just a backfire, never had a car that backfired before, maybe that's what I got going on, I don't know
