98% of the time when it's idling, there is no ping, like this

Sounds like a backfire and the idle dips way down almost killing the engine, unless I am not hearing this correctly (I am getting older).

Sounds like a backfire to me as well.

Now to figure out why - especially if its intermittent.

Does it only happen when you are rev'ing the motor?

Got the revs up a bit more today and got a big ole fat backfire, no question about it....what Te the most common causes?

Sounds like you have a plug wire on the wrong plug. Check your firing order again. Did you have any plug wires off when you rebuilt the carb?
A lean misfire would pop when you are giving it gas, yours was when it was just idling.

Check the coil for oil leakage. A bad coil can cause all sorts of random spark issues. In your early post you thought the sound might be metallic. If your running an auto trans check the torque converter bolts.

:iagree:
As well, if you find they are all in the right order, pop off the dist cap, check the rotor gap (as cp suggested earlier), check terminal condition, and all wires seated fully after the cap in put back in place.
I had a persistent backfire two years ago that I eventually traced to a cracked #3 cyl header tube very close to the head. So check that your headers are sealing well against the head and that none of your plug boots have burned being too close to a tube.

The reluctor could be in the wrong position also there are 2 keyways with a different keyway depending on rotation
