Hooker headers
« on: September 16, 2014 - 08:29:55 PM »
At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, here goes.  The 71 Challenger I just bought already has hooker long tubes on it.  And as I rebuild the 6 pack and give her a good tune up.  It looks like I am going to have to loosen completely and reposition the drivers side header just to replace the spark plugs on that side.  Is there an easier way or is this my only option?  Also, these headers leave minimal clearance for the plug wires without touching them.  Has anyone have some ideas to give more space between the plug wires and headers?

Love the lack of engineering in the design of Hookers & other header why should you ever have to remove the plugs  :clueless:
seriously you can get the plugs out without loosening the headers , I will guarantee you will have leaks if you do , use a wobble extension , slide the socket on from under the header tube & you should be able to loosen it , or you can use a shorty wrench on the end of the spark plug socket  , not fun but doable .

Use shorter plugs, such as header plugs made by Accel.  Its a little easier to access the shorter bodied Accel header plugs.  Sometimes you can access some plugs from underneath the car easier with a 13/16 open end wrench, if you are careful

I use an open end wrench on the end of plug socket.
As do I. I  put about a 30* bend in the open end wrench and save it just for plugs.

I have hookers on my 340 and also use a wrench with a plug socket. I even still use auto light plugs. As far as the plug wires go Taylor makes a set that you can bend were you want them.
This is all just the joy of having headers. If you ever get mad at them look at a big block in one of these cars, you will then like the small blocks. Things like having power brakes and not having to pull the brake booster to pull a valve cover make them very nice.
Its just a little 340 with a miss
