How can I identify Ca emissions car?
« on: September 20, 2014 - 12:05:18 PM »
Hi everyone. Trying to go over my Challenger today to determine what it originally came with before it comes apart. There is no build sheet or fender tag so I have to do it the hard way.

How can I determine if the car was Ca emissions equipped? I see a single vent line inside the trunk going from the backside of the fill spout straight down to the trunk floor. I assume the car is not equipped with that option. Are there other things I need to examine to know one way or the other?

It would have turn down tips not chrome , single vent line should be non CA emissions

It would have turn down tips not chrome

This myth has to end... Most California performance models did have chrome tips... The only cars that didn't were 71 440-6 & 71 426 Hemi equipped cars... A 440 Magnum Challenger R/T would have tips, as would a 383 Magnum or a A66 #40 car...

Yes my 70 R/T is a Calif car. It was built in Ham but for Calif Shipping. It came with the chrome tip and I have the broadcast sheet to prove it. I talked to a few people about this and for some reasons Cuda's seems to have come with turn downs and not Challengers..Don't know how true this is but that is what I heard. Check your gas tank underneath. If it is the original tank and a Calif car it will have 5 vent tubes coming off the passenger side. It is the same on all 71 and up tanks. I believe they also came with the air pump and a special carb.

I've never seen a RB 6pak/Hemi big block CA. emisions car with turn downs.
Not to say they didn't exist.

Yes Brad If my memory servers me right (which it may not since I just turned 59) I remember seeing a small compressor type unit on the lower right side under the alternator on a lot of cars back in the early 70 when I work at a Chrysler/Plymouth dealer. They called them air pump for the emissions. again I could be wrong and it may have been later on in the 70's.

Topcat-I have seen Calif cars with turn downs. I believe it was Ted Stevens who had a triple Black 70 440+6 Calif.Cuda. It was featured a few years ago in MCG. He was at a show and someone asked him why he didn't have the chrome tips on his Cuda because all Cuda had them. Ted said he ran out of money while restoring the car so opted for the cheaper valence and no chrome tips.
I called Galen when I was restoring my Challenger and he is the one who told me that not all Calif had turn downs and it was mostly Cudas.

I looked on rockauto and they don't list one?  :dunno:  BUT.... they do list a replacement filter for a 1970 Vapor Canister Filter?  :clueless: Did they have one?

GM used air pumps starting in 66, Ford started using them in 67.... Chrysler avoided them until 73......

The single vent line in the trunk tells me the O/P's car is a 49 state car.....

On the tips, I agree most 440-6 & Hemi 71's  you see do have tips, a few don't, the California cars aren't supposed to have them but how many guys on the line looking at an obvious performance model coming down the line would have already grabbed an exhaust system with tips, then see the broadcast sheet & it sez no tips... Are you gonna use whats in your hands knowing thats really what the buyer is gonna want, or go back & swap them for the turn downs?  Or the car was built with the turndowns but the buyer wants tips, the salesman sez   "No Problem, we can put those on".. Or the car is a year old & the owner grabs a set of tips & a color matching rear valance off a wrecked car..

This tends to make me believe (theory) that if a CA 71' Hemi car had turn down tips, it would also have the OSAC as well. Orifice Spark Advance control.

This was a green canister located on the intake.

The green valve was called CAP  (Clean Air Package)  it was used from 66-69....  OSAC (orfice spark advance control valve) was mounted into the right firewall & began in 72....

so what was the one on the Hemi?
It was on the intake, not the firewall.

So what emission equipment/parts were on a 1970 Challenger(CA)? Say a 440?  PVC valve, Sealed ( non vented)gas cap, that mess of tubes in the trunk, 2 nipple? 3 nipple? valve cover breather? , hose going from the breather to the air cleaner. gas tank with 5 nipples,  Am I missing anything else?  :dunno:
