New member needs direction for first Mopar project.
« on: April 27, 2005 - 03:56:36 PM »
Hello, I am wondering about which way to go with my latest project, but am not really sure that what I had in mind is the right thing to do. Please help. My car is a 1970 Challenger Convertible, don't get too excited it is plain jane, no power anything, slant six-auto, no air. I was thinking about a mid size v-8, auto, adding the power goodies and air cond. The car does have a power white top w/white interior, and was originally Purple. I don't want to destroy the cars value with the upgrades, but it's pretty boring as-is. I guess I'm wondering if it will be less valuable as original or upgraded. Thanks

Keep the plum Crazy and interior color, I would do the exterior exactly by the numbers, and get a mild 440 under the hood, that way you will have a lot of fun, and only increase the value. And welcome on board

Welcome to the board!!  Sounds like you have a very nice car!  I think with it being a /6,  the value will only go up if you put a v8 in it.  I would keep the /6 on an engine stand, covered in the garage in case you ever want to sell the car with the "original engine".  If it were me, I'd build it up like you want it.  Upgrade the engine (440 will give you the best resale....well, besides a hemi!), and add all the power stuff you want.  Another member on the board, 4Cruzin, is building a 70 Cuda vert, plum crazy, white interior.  It's a beautiful combo!  Got any pics??

First of all, welcome to the board. Now to answer you question, it will be more valuable upgraded. Afterall, who wants a plain jane slant 6 convertible??? Hemi conv. clones are generating tons of moneyalong with big and small block clones, so that pretty much proves that upgrading is worth it. I say you do what you want to it because its your car. I wouldnt hesitate on changing it to a small or big block. The plum crazy / white is a great combination on convertibles so if you want to keep the car somewhat original you could keep it. Anyhow, Good luck with your project and post up a couple of pics because......... :worthless:

Thanks for your help. We are already searching out a 440 but I will keep the six close.

Welcome Suburbob, nice Chally!

I'm going to go against the grain and say go with a nice 340, build a boulevard cruiser, not another R/T clone.

But, yes, keep the /6 close at hand.

I`ll really go against the grain and say be different and restore it all stock. There seem to be tons of 440 and hemi clones around now, when was the last time you saw a restored /6 convertible, ecpecially Plum Crazy/white? If you want to have some fun biuld up the 6 like Mike is doing.

Welcome to the site, Suburbob!  That's a very cool project you have!  Any upgrade on the engine size in a slant 6 '70 Challenger convertible will increase its value.  I'd suggest going with a 440 and possibly topping it off with a six pack. :grinyes:

want to see that car go up the most in $ value and drooooolll factor for the best "bang for your buck" ?

I would treat it like an investment and do it right the first time, go all the way just doing it once.

The "ultimate ride" is at your fingertips and is just a crate 472 Hemi and a 4/5 speed away.

youll have a $70K (or a lot more depending on the market at the moment) car when youre done and that value would be pretty liquid if you ever got tight on cashflow someday.

Build just a small block or mild buig block,  and heres about what youre looking at, though I think Purple would bring a little more all else being equal:

Guys..

Not so fast!! Even plain Jane convertibles hold their own ground, mostly because you NEVER see them anymore....

Granted, this is a 318, not a slant 6, but for the living daylights out of me, if I had a choice between the two, I'd want the /6!
