70 Challenger 3gen,T-56,modern suspension
« on: September 29, 2014 - 11:17:44 AM »
I've come halfway with restoring and thought put out some pictures of the project.
The car comes from Des Moines Iowa, and I imported it to Sweden in 2009.
360cui,manual, 8.75. The car looked to be in reasonable condition
Drove the car 2 summers 2009,2010. started the renovation in 2011 which was supposed to be a rolling refurbishment.
The first thing that should be changed was the gearbox to a Viper T-56, but I had to start from scratch after discovery of much rust.

The hole-body got a sandblasting and epoxy primer.

With the old 360 engine connected to the T-56 box, there was not enough space for the gearbox.
In the pictures you can see that I have replaced parts of the driver's side floor and a bit of the back.
I do the best I can with my limited welding skills
With practice it gets better and better

Nice work so far.

However, I didn't see the trans/t-bar cross member replaced with the new transmission tunnel after it was cut out. If you are retaining the torsion bar front suspension, you will need to rebuild this support piece or you will risk future body twist and suspension problems.

Time to make new mounts to the sport seats from Italian OMP.
Third time lucky, it was either to high/low or to near the propshaft tunnel.
Test mounted the  hydroboost Power Brake Package, looks good.
Smoothing up the firewall and inner fenderwells  from holes and others.
I will hide the power cables as much as possible behind the fenders.

I bought AlterKtion coil-over system from Bill Reily Motorsports.
I have made new stronger trans cross member, do you think I need to do more reinforcements?
The picture shows the new cross member.

If you are using an AlterK, then you are going to be fine.

The lower transmission mount you show is also fine. I was concerned that you cut out the upper portion that runs through the transmission tunnel to fit the T56.  This cross member will see a lot of stress if you use the stock torsion bars because they are anchored in that same cross member.

Installed with Wilwood brakes.
13" front disc brakes, drilled/slotted, SL6 calipers

Another step is to stiffen the chassi.
Made my own lower radiator suport, front fender brace, rear crossmember and some boxes.
Front and rear driveshaft loop
Bought lasercut frame connectors from Mancini Racing.
Prepared for future front strut tower brace.

Color, I had decided from the beginning, "imperial green" because it's really neat and
if the prep work is not perfect, it becomes invisible.

The decision about a 4-link with coil overs was clear but if it would to be purchased or built was uncertain.
I thought it would be interesting to build it myself. Ideas come from Reilly Motorsports street lynx, XV Motorsports rear and from different forums.

Mancini's weld on brace for the rear.
Rear axle and drive shafts shortened approx. 1.5 inches to give the wheels more space.
Wheels and tires I used from an old Project.
The rear end is not tested yet, but it looks good.
I will come back later with some test results.
