How much more HP?
« on: October 07, 2014 - 04:32:32 PM »
I have a 340, 10:1 comp, lunati cam, X heads, 650 eddy, TTIs, 2 1/2" exhaust. A friend says I can gain 20HP by going to roller rockers. Agree or disagree?

I'd say disagree. roller rockers are more of a durability thing. The ratio is more precise and less friction but I can't see 20HP.

Easy gains are intake/carb and exhaust but seeing as you have those covered I'd say maybe taking your cuda to a dyno would net you more of what you want without dumpimg a boatload of cash on NOS or a blower.

I would guess closer to 5 IF the ratio of the stock arms is less than 1.5

I think you also need to consider the cost benefit here and intended use of the car to.  Roller rockers are expensive, and I agree with Brad, not likely you will see 20HP out of them.

Now even if you did see 20HP,  it's a lot of money for 20 HP.  Is the extra 20 HP worth the time and expense for what you want to use the car for?  If you are trying to squeeze that last tenth out of the 1/4 mile, or road course etc. sure maybe its worth it.  but otherwise, I would guess no.

I was rather skeptical of gaining 20HP. Thanks for the input.

I don't know much about SB but if I had one these heads would peak my interest? Do you know anything about them Neil?

Having built far less small blocks over the years , I know the latest W2 makes insane power , , The 308 is a $50 junk yard head & will make 41 RWHP over X heads just bolting them on with some port clean up from my experience , I have never used air wolf heads but I would love to try a set although there is more cost to them than the 308 heads !

If I go to 308 heads do I need to use different lifters, push rods and valve train components or will everything from my X heads just switch over. What were 308 heads used on? This is an area I know very little about.

Wouldn't magnum heads be even better? Higher compression, small valve stem, factory 1.6 rockers, factory 1.9 intake valve.

308 heads are a straight swap , same lifters ,pushrods & rockers . you can use larger valves although we did not .
Magnum heads work too not sure if the same power is there though & everything has to be swapped , new lifters hollow pushrods & the whole rocker system , + it is a chev design , ball stud rocker which can limit valve lift unless u use long slot rockers & they are not as strong although I am sure Moper has a stronger design than the basic Chev

found a pair on ebay

On craigslist, for all states, they sell almost as fast as they are listed.
